British Columbia: Public input sought on hunting regulation changes

One major change:

Current Regulations:
The Provincial bag limit for deer is 3 (not including Haida Gwaii/QCI). Hunters may not harvest more than 3 deer in one licence year. Hunters may harvest 3 white-tailed deer (if they purchase 3 white-tailed deer licenses), or 3 mule deer (if they purchase 3 mule deer licenses), or a combination of white-tailed and mule deer (1+2 or 2+1) providing they do not exceed the provincial limit of 3. The reason hunters may purchase more than 3 deer licenses in total is to provide hunters with the flexibility to harvest any combination of white-tailed or mule deer up to a maximum of 3.

Proposed Regulations:
This proposal seeks to reduce the current Provincial bag limit for Mule deer buck from 3 to 1 from any interior region.

There are two classes of bag limits, Provincial and Regional, neither of these bag limits can be exceeded.

The Provincial bag limit for deer is 3 (not including Haida Gwaii/QCI). Hunters may not harvest more than 3 deer in one licence year, but only 1 may be a mule (black-tailed) deer buck from Regions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7A, 7B and 8 combined. Hunters may harvest 3 white-tailed deer (if they purchase 3 white-tailed deer licenses), or 3 mule (black-tailed) deer (if they purchase 3 mule (black-tailed) deer licenses), or a combination of white-tailed and mule (black-tailed) deer (1+2 or 2+1) providing they do not exceed the provincial limit of 3 and not more than 1 mule (black-tailed) deer buck from Regions 3, 4, 5, 6 ,7A, 7B and 8 combined. The reason hunters may purchase more than 3 deer licenses in total is to provide hunters with the flexibility to harvest any combination of white-tailed or mule (black-tailed) deer up to a maximum of 3.

Well if they wish to play this sort of numbers game, how about just a deer tag for either deer?
And LEH's one should at least have a hunting licence and maybe a species tag as well to enter.
This would sure eliminate the do gooders that are successful, but don't hunt.

Yes, they are out there in numbers.

I like those ideas. Go onto the province's comments page and pass them on.

anti hunters are doing this?

No. I would assume it is the provinces biologists in most cases,

To me the mule deer reduction however smells like it is tainted by input from the hunting guides association who have been pushing for a reduction in the mule deer buck kill for several years.

Good points.

Everyone in our group scored a spiker muley this year (4 guys). No one so anything more impressive.

On another note ...................

While there are no wild or feral hogs on Vancouver Island apparently there are turkeys. Just like hogs on the mainland - if the regulation passes - there will no bag limits or closed seasons for V.I. turkeys. Sort of makes up for the whole Grizzly fiasco eh? ;)

I have mainly mulies, but a small cadre of white tails has held on, and there are a few that can only be explained away by hybridization.
Overall, our immediate area, our property and the surrounds, the numbers are down, but I lay that at the feet (paws?) of a fair healthy cougar population culling out the unwary. And we had lots of those, essentially park deer, rather than deer that had to work to survive.

I see that the NDP is moving fast to ruin hunting in british columbia.
I also see that these regulations are pure bullsh*te and will do nothing but increase poaching.
Was out ice fishin today with a rather large group of 100 mile house locals and the entire group pretty much agreed that if they move ahead with all these bogus restrictions based on sentiment from anti hunting groups...... they are just gonna get thier deer regardless.

There is a very large pecentage of long time rural hunters that are becoming very jaded with the stupid decisions based on politics and not animal numbers. There are loads of deer around these parts. The populations are very healthy. Heck even the moose populations in many parts of region 5 have rebounded quite nicely but have learned to avoid the roads. I found many bulls out late season mulie hunting, bulls that seemed to easily survive the fires and hunting season LOL

Here in BC we are about to be hit with the largest anti hunting push we have ever faced. I'm having none of it.
the only hunts i want to see changed/end are Cow and Calf moose hunts province wide and all Bull hunts changed to mature bulls only, No spikers. The region 5 rut closure that was done to favor the BC guide industry and I want to see an abrupt end to the Youth Doe season.
and that's it..... oh wait..... I want to see black bear hunting on haida gwaii returned to it's pre christy clarke status and I want to see Grizzly bear conservation hunting put back into practice.
I would also Like to see an immediate end to foreign ownership and employment in the BC hunting and sportsfishing guiding industry as well as NO foreign ownership or employment in Wildlife viewing industry.

that's it haha

It's all about votes ,sentiment and political correctness, not facts and science. The other day there was a report in the newspaper saying '150 Grizzlies would be alive today if the ban on hunting Grizzlies had of been passed a year ago'......ah,excuse he,are we to believe that Grizzlies live forever and only die when they are killed by hunters?...chances are that when someone pays big bucks to hunt Grizzlies, they are going to only choose a large mature boar, likely whose life is already been well lived....all there is to look forward to is to die of starvation, disease or injury...the biggest threat to ANY wildlife is loss of habitat, not hunting which the biologists say only accounts for about 15% of mortality anyway....in other words, whether we ban hunting or not makes very little diference to the overall game population....but that's a FACT,and naive simplistic people don't WANT facts...
