I picked up an SPS tactical in .223 a month ago, but haven't been able to take it out. With snow flying and Coyote season coming, I wanted to try some loads and sight it in.

I have modified it a bit from stock, replacing the Hogue with an HS precision stock, and installing a Jewel trigger.
I started off with some of my old reloads, and shot. 3 shot group of about .75" with the first 3 shots.
Then I broke out the 70 grn VLDs with 24 grains of Varget. I haven't measured the group yet, but it's around 1/2".

The weather looked to be going bad, so I jumped to my 24.7 grn loads, and they shot around .75", but I started to get pressure signs.
I then moved on to my Coyote loads, and started with 53 grn Vmax over 26 grn of benchmark.
My load development was over in 5 shots.

By far the tightest 5 shot group I've ever shot.
I didn't expect load development to go so fastl, and only brought 5 of each load...but hopefully the next time out they shoot just as well.

Dont take this the wrong way as im just getting into precision shooting. The groups are nice and tight together but shouldnt they be in the bullseye? Ive seen guys post this stuff before, if its not in the bulleye is your scope off or something?

I was trying a few different loads, and wasn't sighted in finely. Different loads shoot differen places, the point wasn't to hit the middle, but find what grouped best. Next time out I'll bring a few more of the promising loads and if they shoot as well I'll dial it in and call it done.

awesome shooting! i will be picking up a 700 sps in .223 very soon as well and was also looking at the vortex scopes. Mind telling me the model and where did you get your stock?

the scope is a Viper HS 4-16x44 LR.
The stock is a take off from a Remington LTR, and I bought it in the classifieds here. They get snapped up wuick, but if you check often you will find one. They usually go for $225-$250, and are well worth the $$ over the factory Hogue.

When shooting groups or testing loads most guys don't really care where the rounds land on the target so long as they are tight. Once the load is figured out and repeatable results are achieved, then you go about adjusting the groups to the center of the target.

People never listen when you tell them the accuracy you can get from a factory barreled action from Remington. Nice to see im not the only one that has it figured out. Keep up the good work and keep posting. This is good stuff i love it !

The full length aluminum bedding block version of the Hogues are very nice and offer up a pile of stability to boot.

Pilot2001:

Like you I'm loving my SPS Tac .223 barrel I pulled off and then sold the action. I kept the barrel so that Doug at Ellwood Epps in Orillia could rechamber the .223 barrel with a 9" twist, into a .22-250 that will now shoot the 68 gr Hornady HPBT match boolits that I dearly love. The are all grouping (3 rd groups) into a dime at 100m and that's plenty accurate enough for the coyotes I wanna try (big TRY) to tag this winter.

I love it when factory barrels shoot really well!

Cheers,
Barney
