So I just bought my first rifle on Saturday. Picked up a 10/22 (Black Syn, SS barrel). They were selling packages, so I got the rifle, soft bag, bushnell scope and a plastic lip Butler Creek 25 rnd mag.

Took it out for a quick test run today. The 25rd mag loaded fine the first round, jammed loading the second round, third rd etc. So I think Im gonna take the mag back to the store I bought it from and see if they will give me something different or another ruger rotary clip.

Anyways, when the round would jam, it was bending the round where the bullet met the casing. SO obviously I will not use those rounds again, but I was wondering if the jamming was dependant on the type of ammo used? I bought the cheapst I could get which was the red box of 400rds of Federals.

Another question I wanted to ask is tips for cleaning and maintaining the rifle? Is there a good gun cleaning kit anyone recommends??

Cheers
Andrew

I found with the butler creek mags if i load them FULL the first one jams. If you leave one or two out it works all the time. .22 ammo is cheap enough that i wouldnt use the cheapest stuff around.

Im not sure how many I had loaded in there, but I know it was not 25. I think it was around 21, 22.

I think Ill see if they will give me steel lips, or if I throw them like $5 to upgrade it.

With the BC mags, you should really train them first.

Start loading ten. Fire about 100 like that, then 15... then 20... etc...

The springs are really tight at first (which is why you only loaded 21 or 22!), and this creates a tiny delay in the next round being moved to the top (friction resistence). When this happens, the bolt is already coming back, hits the round funny, and jams.

Train it a bit, and it should work fine.

Are all 10/22 parts interchangable? I mean could I put the trigger and sear from a target model? I know you would need a different stock, but can I use the target barrel? Im not saying Im gonna do this, or its worth it, Im just trying to get an idea of the assemble, parts and general function of everything. Do this when I get new toys!!

It might be beacuse your BC mag has plastic feed lips and not steel ones? The plastic lips are total garbage from waht I hear

I tried taking it back today, they would not exchange it, nor allow me to upgrade to the steel lips. Not very impressed. Don't think Ill go back there.

Im still wondering if I can use the target internals inside my normal 10/22?

I'm just as satisfied with the BC hot lips (plastic lip) mags as the steel lips. The one I got was no better, no worse than the steel lip. I'd say for me at least, the only advantage of the steel lip mag is that it might last longer. I have shot a lot of rounds through both, and get the odd jam, that as you observed, deforms the case and makes it unusable. I save them and shoot them in my bolt gun.

Try different ammo until you find one that is accurate and feeds reliably. The Federal bulk ammo and American Eagle 40gr all seem to shoot fine.
