Finally got to put some rounds thru my m305/usgi hybrid. Things seemed to be working good till the gun FTE on the 14th round. Empty casing was lodged in the chamber. The bolt group couldnt grab onto it good enough to extract so i locked it back and knocked the casing out using modest taps with a cleaning rod. Case seemed fine, no rings, no cracks or popped primer. Upon inspecting the bolt face i noticed that most of the extractor claw had sheared off.

Packed everything up along with some of the fired bass including the FTE one. Will post pics of brass and components later.

-2009 norc receiver

-Was firing brass cased Austrian 7.62x51

-Rifle has H&R chromelined barrel that swallows a .308 no go gauge.

-Gun presumably has a older gen norc bolt. But it could also be a USGI one ? Ill have to check later.

Ordered some replacement parts from Numrich.com

Ive read that broken extractors is generally uncommon with the m14 pattern, but some Springfield Armory rifles have had them fail.

My question is, what all factors could cause something like this to happen? If it isnt just poor luck on my part and standard wear, id like to resolve the issue before i bust more of the extractors i have on order haha

Thanks.

Things are looking bleak. Numrich notified me that they cannot ship m14 parts to Canada. So now im stuck searching for other sources.

You buy an M1 Garand extractor. M1 Garand extractor and M14 extractor = same part (7791578).

And you grind/file the extractor stem - if needed - so it does not extend below flush with the bottom of the bolt body.

this ^^^^^ is good advice

whenever us gun nuts need "m14" parts from the USA …. remember, in the USA the M14 is considered a "machine gun" when it comes to it's parts. So what we are looking for and able to order is M1A parts. Some outfits like numrich won't tell you that, they assume you know. Brownells has a filter that enables a buyer to view only items available for sale outside the USA. One will notice that most "m14" stuff on brownells is listed as M1A parts.
Same with garand…. it was never a "machine gun" so M1 Garand parts are available to us. Extractors, ejectors and trigger components (except housing) are near direct drop ins for the M14 family of rifles.

Awesome to know, i caught a hint of the whole M1 extractor thing browsing thru US forums... but presumed sourcing out a M14 platform extractor wouldnt be so hard so i pursued that. Ill start looking for M1 extractors instead.

Have you tried Western Gun Parts in Edmonton? Or Brownells?

Brownwells doesnt seem to have any m14 pattern extractors, and I just assumed Western Gun parts mostly carried manual arms parts... but i guess I should check regardless!

haven't ordered parts in a while but I would just put an add in the EE for an extractor.
Treelinem14 used to be a good source and shipped to Canada last time I needed something. Not sure what their status is these days.

You will need someone with a bolt assembly tool

TonyBen3's 30-06 case method worked for me last time. reassembly was a b!tch because the ejector and extractor springs on my rifle are slightly longer then necessary. I ordered spare M1 Garand springs from Numrich so i can try shortening a set.

Welp after numerous weeks of waiting my parts from Numrich arrived:

2 like new GI M1 Garand extractors
1 reproduction M1a ejector and spring
1 reproduction M1a extractor plunger and spring.
Plus 2 other non related parts

I think I may have some spring issues...
The Extractor plungers look fairly close. However original is both slightly longer and larger in diameter then the repo.
The largest difference is between the Ejectors and their springs. Not only is the size difference very noticeable but also the ejector heads are shaped different as well.

I dont really have any issues with continuing to use the original springs, i ordered these new ones just so i had spares.

What does concern me with the originals is how much they protrude from the bolt. This makes bolt reassembly challenging and when compared to other M14 pattern bolt group reassembly vids my springs appear to protrude out more then others.... wonder if i should indeed shorten them a little bit ?

Ah i read now that i most likely received a M1 garand ejector and spring. Interesting tho, i read the M1a springs are supposed to be around 1.550", mine measures 2.100" ...

The bolt tool compresses the ejector spring so that you can drop in the extractor
The cut in the ejector is lined up with the extractor
The bolt tool is the easy way to do it

I didnt do my research right initially lol i was mistaken to believe that the M1 Garand bolt group springs were compatible as well. So i ordered some.... oops, at least that solves my mystery.

Got her done with some cussing. Didnt bother shortening any springs especially after doing further research on the proper "to spec" lengths. No idea where the 1.550" dude got his info from, m14forum seems to consistently state 2.13" is the healthy spec. Which is what mine currently measures  many m14 guru's say they replace them when they reach close to 2". Which leaves little material for me to cut to begin with.
