Hey everyone, I've been wondering about this for a little while, and I thought I would ask the collective milsurp authorities their opinion on the matter. I have recently come across an old Mauser C96, but to call her "poorly maintained" is more credit than she deserves. Smooth bored, no bluing, just a brown patina, etc. Mechanically she's A-OK. I was wondering on a scale of 1-extra heresy, how would it score if I were to give her a thorough cleanup? By thorough I mean re boring to 9mm luger, securing the correct red 9 style grips, and stripping the finish to apply a nice Niedner style rust blue (only the best for such a gorgeous design :p). Opinions?

Brownells and Numerich have some parts listed. If you come across a spare mag follower for a 7.63 I need one.

I'll make sure to keep my eyes open for a follower, Colin. Is repro ok? Mbogo, where could I send the pistol to have this done? How much would it cost?

I've been thinking that a non-messed with example of a C96 is needed as a finish reference point... Does anyone have any info on what was finished and how? Finally, another nagging concern. Should I mark anywhere on the pistol that it was refurbished, or just leave it alone? I personally don't want to add any marks to it, but I'm not sure if it's proper form to leave an indication that it's no longer the original finish.

do you have pictures? is it a collectible? or one of the junkers out of China ? doing anything could be destroying it's value. post some pictures with the markings.

 false alarm guys. The pistol I was looking at was snapped up by someone else :(. Thanks anyway for all the help and support!

But, if anyone comes across an example of this pistol in ANY shape, and the price is right; give me a shout. You'll have my undivided attention!
