So, my brother-in-law's Browning Silver needs some work.

  • The threads on the magazine tube seem slightly buggered, and the tube cap threads appear even more buggered (I think it's aluminum and the tube itself is steel). Brother-in-law is a careful guy and has no idea how it happened, although presumably poor maintenance is somehow to blame? Otherwise, is there some way this can happen just through usage?
  • The bolt seems very stiff to come back.
  • He can barely get the barrel out of the action.

Might there be some over-arching issue that could combine all three of these problems into one root cause? He expects he needs to buy a new mag tube at the least; personally, I suspect a thread chaser could sort the mag tube out, along with a new tube cap. But the other problems seem wonky.

None of that is normal, my Silver is about 12 or so years old now and probably 4-5,000 rounds through it, 0 problems. Takes down easily and goes back together easily. Is there anything with the receiver itself? The bolt and barrel are in line with each other, so it sounds like something has happened at some point that maybe affected the receiver and in turn, bolt and barrel are having issues. Did it fall off a cliff or the top of a truck or something?

Not that I know of. I only had time for a quick look at it, but it seems properly buggered up. He says it shoots fine still, though.

Tell him to take it to Chris at the Gun Dealer . He's an excellent shotgun gunsmith.
