Has anyone shoot a Browning a-bolt with the Boss system? Is there any advantage. I have a a-bolt in 300 win mag with no boss and would like to get a 375 H&H mag in the same rifle. Wondering if I should go with the muzzle break or not.

Anyone have a comment?

I had an A-bolt with boss in 7mmremmag.I found that it took just as many shots to optimize the boss as it takes me to develop a handload for a rifle. The resulting accuracy was just as good or better with handloads and no boss.Add in the fact that the boss came loose several times which changed the point of impact.Lastly, boss equipped rifles come with shorter barrels to compensate for the length of the boss so the boss equipped rifles produce less velocity. In short,I will never own another boss equipped rifle.

I am with stubblejumper too.
Even though my rifle was a Winny 70 Supergrade. The boss would not stay locked tight. I found as soon as the outside temp changed so did my groups too.
Way too loud, and clumsy.

FWIW,

Noel

only advantage to a BOSS sysytem is the reduced felt recoil by about 30%. It might be a consideration when shooting a caliber such as a 375 H&H. If you plan on using it stritcly for hunting and only a few shots a year, I would say forget it. The adrenaline and hunting clothes will take care of the "felt recoil"

Not to mention that the brake greatly increases the noise level to the shooter. You must never fire a brake equipped rifle without hearing protection.Even a single shot can cause permanent hearing damage.

WHHAAAT??????? What did he say????????

Yeah, I shot mine once without protection, right ast the top of my list for dumbests things I've done. I can honestly say my ears have never been the same either.

Stuiped brakes........

I had an A-bolt medallion for a bit with the Boss system...It worked well for me...I used the brake for the bench and the non-brake (Boss-CR) for hunting. I owned that rifle for only a few months and used it elk hunting with success. Just not a Browning fan, but figured the Boss system (as far as muzzle brakes go) seemed to work pretty well.:) With that being said I am currently shooting a 375 H&H with no brake and no problems. Stock fit is much more important (learned that the hard way) .

Wow, that must be pretty ####ty...I mean having to hunt with freakin' earplugs in. :D

I like my boss! Its never come loose. Yes I use ear plugs, but not for hunting (that’s what buck fever is for). Killed my first moose 2 weeks ago! Write me If you come to the rock and you can try it yourself. Only you can decide if you like it!

I only own a few rifles with various muzzle brakes, included in the bunch is a M70 Laredo in 300 Win Mag with a BOSS system, in general I don't install brakes on rifles that are easy to shoot but for some of the bigger boomers or on very lightweight rifles they have their place, they make working up loads alot more comfortable at the range and help with extended shooting sessions. People that find them unsuitable on a hunting rifle can very simply have a cap fitted for their days afield that can easily be replaced with the brake when range sessions are on the agenda. The best of both worlds IMHO. For varmint hunting they are the cat's meow for being able to see the bullet strike.

If you contact Browning customer service, they have some suggested settings for the BOSS so that you don't need to burn a box of shells to find out on your own. I shot my 375 H&H today. BOSS set at 2.8 just like they said. All I can say is WHOA!!! That was fun. I have it on the board for sale but now i am not so sure...

Those suggested settings may or may not work with a given rifle. They were not even close for my rifle and loads.

Advertising Gimmick.
Nope!! ..... Not just a gimmick or gadetry!

They are best used for the non-handloader. I've seen them work and they do a great job of tuning the bbl to the load, whereas a handloader tunes the load to the bbl.

I wouldn't have one, but they do what they are intended to do.

I had one on a 30-06 A-Bolt it was super accurate once it was tuned, however I despised how loud it was, that it made the barrel 2" shorter, and the way it looked. It's the only rifle I have never regretted selling.
