I was looking around forums and picture sites last night and I came across a couple pictures of a Browning pistol, .45 Auto and after trying to find this firearm on the web I cannot come up with anything anywhere. It looks exactly like a Sig Sauer P220 except the grip said browning and the receiver had browning stamped into it.

whats the deal with this pistol??

thx.

Browning 45

I have one I bought in 1970.
Made by Sauer by Sig spec's before Sig bought out Sauer.
Now they are Sig 220.

Sig did not start making the P220, a.k.a. Browning BDA, until 1975. How much do you want for the time machine? :D

So would a brand new one be worth some extra beans? :) I contacted the guys who's pictures they were and he has one of them brand new.

How do these first models compare with the current version of the P220? Will any P220 accessory work with these older models?

Thanks guys,

If you can read I said mine was made by Sauer NOT Sid, it was a Sig design. As for a time machine what's your problem is sarcasism you only true worth.

Thanks guys,

Not worth a premium IMHO......early models have heel mag release, different grips, some minor internal differences.

Pimlott,

The first working prototypes of the P220 emerged in 1973-74. The gun was adopted by the Swiss military in 1975 (hence, it's knows as Pistole 75 in Switzerland). Commercial production did not begin until 1976, which also happens to be the year when SIG bought Sauer & Sohn. Imports to North America under the Browning name started shortly thereafter. All of this is a long way of saying that the P220 simply did not exist in 1970.

Seeing how we are talking about something that happened over three decades ago, are you sure you're not simply confusing the dates? Perhaps you bought your gun in 1980.

Early models were known for cracking frames. There was also a problem with the trigger bar spring eating through the frame. Sig beefed up the frame in 1994 and redesigned the spring sometime in the late 90s.

Personally, I'd go with a newer model especially if I was planning to shoot it frequently.

When I made my entry I should have put 's behind 70 as in 70's.
I bought it at Gordons sporting on Hillside in Victoria, it was after I retired from RCAF , the IPSC gang thought I was out of step buying it instead of a 1911.
At 75 yrs I sometimes leave out or make bad spelling mistakes, but it doesn't seem to be so important any more, as in waking up in the morning.

Ah yes, Gordon's Sporting Goods on Hillside..... long closed. Owned by the guy with the real loud voice. Bought my first mountain bike there circa 1985....

Well thanks alot guys for the detailed info, like I always get around here.:)

So would most P220 accessories fit the BDA model ? Grips for example? if not, which model grips would fit this model besides BDA model grips which i assume are few and far between.

Thx.

*EDIT* After looking at a few online stores It would appear that the P220 grips would not work. however the P225 model shows the grips to be almost identical including screw mount locations etc.

I don't think anyone makes replacement grips for the early SIG's anymore. They have the heal mag release, and the decocker arrangement is slightly different internally.

Bda 45

I have one BDA 45 made in 1978. Nice ``big`` 45 but a very accurate pistol out of the box...more than my Colts. But each has their merits....I like the Browning as it wont jam and will work each time if I need it...kind of pistol I'd like to have in a ``worst case scenario survival situation`` And the heel mag release, not the best in competition I agree, makes sure I wont lose my mags...Mk
