A buddy has a Japan-made Browning A-5 Light 12 in good (in my opinion) used condition.

A few little dings in the wood, minor scratches on the metal.

Barrel doesn't appear to be ringed though he admits shooting steel through the barrel.

It's been his primary goose, duck and pheasant gun for years, but he is getting elderly, quit hunting and I'd like to make him a fair offer.

There is nothing fancy about this gun, it has a rib and it appears to have a 26-inch barrel, as he kep sit in an an ordinary rifle case.

Any suggestions as to even a ball park idea for value?

I have a Belgian made A5 Light 12 that I bought for $450 about 7 years ago. The wood and the metal (reciever, barrel and bore) were excellent with 1 small scratch on the foregrip. Also Marstar has a Browning A5 that is in excellent plus condition for $500. Hope this helps. -Jason

Auto 5

Hi,

I've bought two Belgian Auto 5's off the board in the last couple years both in excellent condition. One made in 1962 with round knob and full choke and the other made in 1967 with modified choke. I paid in the $400.00 to $500.00 bracket for each.

For the one your looking at that has seen the hunting you describe a fair offer around $300.00 + / - would seem the ballpark.

Mine only see the Trap and Sporting Clay fields but they are a pleasure to own and shoot.

Belgians command more money, as do Japanese with screw-in chokes. This one sounds like a Japanese with fixed choke, so lower in the price/utility spectrum. Still a beautiful shotgun though.

Auto 5

I have to disagree on value as the Japanese made Auto 5 is every bit as good as the Belgium made, or better. So, as a shooter firearm that has some wear and tear, value wise ,I would hold them the same. If your looking at collector status for minty guns then the Belgium is the gun to buy.

My humble opinion.
