I will be taking apart an A5 for restoration.

Is there any pre-screw up advice I need to know on this shotgun before I start?

I have some diagrams I found on-line to guide me but there is always little tricks and maneuvers that a guy doesn't always know to make life easier.

Can one do a proper bluing job at home or send the parts out?

All advice is greatly appreciated.

This should help if you don't have it already:

As far as bluing goes, a proper hot bluing is very difficult, and very expensive to do at home. You are much better off sending it out to be done by a professional. Rust bluing can be done at home, but it has it's own risks and costs and is very time consuming. Apparently Gunco in Ottawa does a very good job of bluing guns.

Hope that helps.

There is a little screw on the side that has ruined 3 screwdrivers on me. I have since switched to G96 and leaving it alone. If you start, make sure your screw drivers have a warranty!

Buy a few Sear/Canada Tire screwdrivers and grind them to fit each screw perfectly. Use a padded vise to hold things steady and two hands on the tight screws... be careful you don't bend the action in a vise, when the guts are out it is easily distorted. You will never polish it as well as it was done originally but what ever you do don't 'wipe' the screw holes and sharp lines with a buffing wheel. How good the finished job looks is all in the preparation of the metal.

Well I got it apart as far as I am comfortable doing.

It is down to the bare receiver with mag tube, which the instructions recommended not to do so I left it as is.

Still need to strip the trigger to get the guard bare as well.

Now just gotta contact someone to do the blubbing so I can get the procedure for proper prepping.

Anybody closer to the prairies than Ottawa?

P.S. Kelly-1, Screws-0

"...Can one do a proper bluing job at home..." The equipment required is pricey. Basically three temperature controlled(heat) dip tanks and 'hanger wires'. Plus a room with absolutely no ferrous metals you don't want rusted in it.
I believe the Auto 5 is in one of the NRA Gunsmithing Guides. Or one of the Firearms Disassembly guides. Exploded drawings won't help.
"...Canada Tire screw drivers..." Sears is too expensive.

I used the guide provided by blastattack and found a video online, everything actually went pretty smooth.

Modified a screw driver slightly and before turning any screw gave the back of the screw driver a couple taps with the hammer , all worked out.

I am going to leave the mag tube on and the non-blued part of the rear of the barrel/chamber so that I don't destroy and bend any pieces.
