Hi,

I just bought a Browning Auto 5 Mag and I am a bit confuse with the setup. I have one bronze friction brake and one friction ring installed before the spring, as indicated in the manual. The manual says that this setup is for 2¾" & steel. Does that means that it is for 2¾" steel and 3" steel or just for 3" steel?

Jack :)

Is this a fixed choke Belgium Auto 5 Mag? if so I suspect it is full choke and won't tolerate steel shot if that is what you are thinking.
I don't have an auto 5 manual handy but recall that the positioning of the rings determined whether the gas piston was set for 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells to cycle properly. the natural position on the mag would be set for 3 inch shells.

The set up I use on my Browning 12 gauge 3 inch is as follows. For 3 inch I use steel ring, bronze ring,2 steel rings and then another bronze ring. For 2 3/4 inch I use a steel ring, then a bronze ring. These I put on the end of the spring just under the barrel ring.

Hi thanks for the response.

My barrel is 32 in long and has been modified for steel shot (from full to mod). I was just wondering if "2¾ & steel" was for 2¾ steel also or only 2¾ lead.

I know that 3 in steel will cycle the action, but 2¾ steel has less powder and I don't know if it will do the job.

I know that the this is for remington but they sell a steel barrel and claim that the pressure of 3" steel is the same as 23/4 lead magnum loads. Just a guess but I would say that is what is going on with your browning.
Different setup for 3" lead than 3" steel.
Good luck

The last time I looked a Browning Auto Five did not have a gas piston. If you want the correct placement of friction rings and bronze bushings go to shotgunworld. There is a sticky on it.

My A5 won't cycle steel 3" on the "lead" 3" setting- just like it won't cycle (very well) lead 2 3/4. I changed it to to the 2 3/4 lead & steel configuration and all works great with 3" steel.

You can still get the user manual in pdf format from the browning site.

FWIW: I swapped out the original 32" barrel for a 28" invector with screw in chokes.

I've got a jap auto 5 magnum 12 with a 32" bbl as well. For three inch steel I still use the 3" ring setup but I only shoot 1 1/4 oz or higher shot. Anything less won't push the action enough. Remember that it's better to err on the side of too much friction than too little, otherwise stuff breaks down. I would reccomend keeping the mag tube clean with a LIGHT film of oil on it-makes all the difference. I like G96 the best.

You can also add a bit more lube onto the magazine tube if it is close to cycling but not quite all the way there.

Thats very good advice.

Also the 3 inch Browning with light 2 3/4 inch loads do not always cycle. In older Browning listings they advised that the light 2 3/4 inch loads were not recomemded for use in the 3 inch auto loader because the 3 inch Browning used a heaiver spring than the non 3 inch shotgun.

Here is a way to tell if your Auto 5 is cycling properly. When the hulls are ejecting at a 45 degree angle it is ejecting perfectly. 60 degrees and the action is cycling to hard and you are pounding yourself and the action. 30 degrees and your cycling to soft and could cause the hulls to stovepipe. FWIW I set mine to the 2 3/4 setting and leave it. Better to have a little more recoil than a hangup.

These are one tough gun by the way. My father in law has a 1966 standard 12 that he has been using with 2 3/4 magnum loads since 1966 with no rings or friction piece installed!! He has close to 10,000 rds easily down the pipe with no hangups (I wonder why)

i had an auto 5 for years. it was made in belgium around 1936 i believe. it would feed and cycle no matter what i fed it. great guns, dont sell them. they just dont break.

Put the 3" ring setup & lube or oil on them the auto-5 does not have any gas pistons
it reloads by recoil energy, still has less energy this why you need some lube,The rings
desigh for lead recoil .

Where can I get a barrel for those Auto 5 Mag in Canada and how much could it cost?

Jack :)

Jack, Hastings makes a replacement barrel for your gun.
Check Cabelas or WSS or even your local gun shop and ask if they can gt one for you .
When I was with my buddy we went to Kesselrings in Washington and they had a Browning Auto -5 in stock ( this was 1989 btw) it was vent rib, choked all in it was under $200.00US, but I am sure the price has changed for today.
Do some digging , it can not be that hard to find one.
