Browning Auto 5/Remington Model 11 Safe?

Hello Gentlemen,

I wanted to confirm or debunk some rumors about these two (11-48 as well) shotguns I have heard. Perhaps you wise shotgun gentlemen will be able to aid me, as my realm is primarily milsurp rifles.

Firstly, I have heard that one cannot run modern "high brass" 12 gauge 2 3/4" ammunition through these arms due to safety issues. Something to do with the metal not being case hardened or of poor metallurgy in early production runs? Is this true? Is there any ammunition in 12 gauge you cannot run through it?

Secondly, I have heard that it is not recommended to shoot very light loads (such as clay lead loads) through one of these shotguns, as there will not be sufficient recoil to operate the action system? Is this true?

Any loads in 2 3/4 (except steel in fixed choke belgian barrels) can be shot through an Auto-5. If the action won't cycle then set your rings to the light setting. If you go on shotgunworld.com there is tons of info on these shotguns.
 
My cousin has one, early model, seriel in the 50 range with no prefix .... He shoots his deer every fall with it using shots, and does every other kind of hunting imaginable ... Mod choke is the only requirement ...

1) False.
2) True. On the Auto 5 there is a piece inside (friction ring?) that you turn around when using lighter ammunition.
 
Careful consideration leads me to post the following warning.
Auto 5's and model 11's should not be shot!!!
They should be mailed to me immediatley!!!
I will care for them. I will keep you safe,;)

Good info there.
I try and keep my mag tube, spring and the working pieces sprayed with silicone
lube and wiped. They get dirty pretty quick and start to drag. One chap somewhere
on the web world mentioned he buys a new spring and brass ring always when he buys
one of these ole gals used. He mentions that the spring does shrink in length over time.
He is right on that one. I just pull the darn thing so I end up with about a half inch of space between the fore wood and receiver before I put the end cap on. You should have to
push the barrel into the receiver a bit to get the fore wood threaded end cap to screw on.
My experience with these. Just remember what you paid for this advice.
