Just got this gun from my step father (he passed away so I can't ask any questions about its history). From what I can tell it's marked with an * so it's a full choke. In order to run steel through this can I just have the choke opened up to modified or is the entire barrel incompatible with steel?

I've seen plenty that have been shooting steel since the begin that were just openned up, it may eventualy lead to barrel wear, but you can always buy a replacement barrel in the event that happens.

More details on this? I've had two guns opened from full to mod and this is the first I've heard about the forcing cone for BB+ steel shot

My shooting buddy had his forcing cone opened on his 870 Wing Master and says it has improved the felt recoil (less felt recoil).
It is a matter of opinion on whether it is a needed operation or a "may as well have it done" while the smith has it for the choke modification
Some like it, others Swear by it and yet others Swear at it.
The choice is yours.

I have an older A5 barrel which I ran some BB and/or BBB through. It put dents in the forcing cone. I wonder if I have a picture . . .
