Did a search, and found nothing. I'm wondering if anyone has converted an Auto 5 to a shorty bear gun? I've seen a couple for sale lately, and had the idea I could cut one down, and build a reliable bear gun. The inetia system shouldn't be affected by shortening the barrel, should it? I suppose the used ones I've seen have a very high round count, but I've heard they're hard to wear out. Any comments?

I found one chap last year with an A-5 chopped down barrel to 20"
I believe.
He lengthened the mag tube by a couple of shells by using an 870
mag tube extension.
He had to shim it somewhere where the end nut screws on.
I think he made a sling spacer to fill the void.
I had photos of the whole package and I think he cancelled or moved
the photos.
I may of saved it somewhere here on Fred.
I will looky later and see if there is anything left of it.
He mentioned not to cut the barrel any shorter than 20" as it
would affect the action cycling properly.
It was pretty wicked looking..... :D

sell it and buy a proper shotgun "you will spend more money trying to modded it and then make it unsellable"

As a bear gun it does not need any tactical mods.

The long recoil system is effected by chopping the barrel, but that only effects it if you are running light loads through it. Not all target loads are reliable with the friction rings set to light loads in my chopped Auto 5.

Have your friction rings set up correctly for the load you are going to use, and be sure it cycles reliably with that load. If it does, perfect!

I run one for 3-gun. Only mods are a hacksaw chop to 20" on the barrel, and a Ram-Line stock set.

Get one with the 2 piece lifter!

Hook- I threw the word "tactical" in to get attention. The ones I've seen for sale were in the $400 range. Wouldn't be any cheaper than a 930, by the time it's finished, but I think the novelty would be worth something.

kamlooky- I think a 20" barrel would be just fine

Well after all that digging, all I found was the literature and a side shot of the A-5
right side receiver.
Here is his write up........

I wanted to mount the Wild West Guns rear sight I had on hand, but it screws into the receiver top. The receiver is too thin on the top center due to the serrations milled in.
There were already three holes drilled in the side for a Williams peep sight, so I found one of those and used it. Natuarally, only two of the three crooked holes lined up with the sight base. It should be fine, but time will tell.

I had the barrel shortened to 19.5" and had a front sight base from a Rem 1100/870 silver soldered on.
Why 19.5"? I don't know.

The mag tube extension is for an 1100/870. They are the same thread, but the M11 has more threads- about 1/4" more. I made a spacer by sandwiching two pieces of angle iron together, and trimming away metal until it also gave me a sling loop slot and a light mount point.
You can take the boy off the farm, but can't take the farm out of the boy. Baling wire and angle iron are wonder materials to me.
I know mag tube extensions are of arguable value, but I like having one so I can load to standard capacity and still be able to shove a slug in.

I got a Browning A5 2-piece carrier from a guy (for the taking) , but I couldn't get it to fit right. It's been a few months, so I don't recall exactly the problem, but I want to say it was a little narrow and would need some shimming to come close to working at all. This makes me think it was for a 20 ga and not a 12. Either that, or a Browning carrier used in a Remington 11 needs some adaptation.

The British issue Browning Auto 5's with the standard 24" barrel with rifle sights, 8 shot mag tube and wooden forend. It was also issue in South Africa and Rhodesia.
