Browning BAR Mk II Safari

I'm interested in the BAR Safari. Mostly looking for a .30-06 or .338 WM. Can anyone school me on what years or models I should look for. I've been a bolt man til now.

Regards Ih

Bars are good really in most any date of production. Some people prefer the older steel receivers over the newer alloy versions. The Safari MKII versions usually have the external bolt stop lever which in my experience is something that should have been on all versions of that rifle and they are hard to find used these days. As for any rifle, knowing the history of the rifle you are looking at is important. These are hunting rifles and usually haven't been shot as much as bolt guns but some used semi autos haven't had their gas systems maintained very well. The BAR design is one of the most user freindly maintenance wise but still more work than your bolt guns. Make sure to get good photos of the interior of the receiver and of course the wood work. Replacement stocks can be had from Boyds and mechanical parts are still around but getting somewhat scarce. Enjoy, they are fun to shoot but generally not as accurate as bolt guns.

Thanks rascal1. Are the current safari mkII's made with alloy receivers?

Not sure if Browning is still offering the MkII Safari models in steel any longer. They were a few years ago. The long track and short track models are alloy receivers. Check the Browning web site to be sure. I had a MKII. 270 a few years ago that I did a bit of work to the metal as it was a bit abused. Stripped and re-blued it, added a new action spring, she shot like new. Still regret selling it....
