I am thinking about buying a Browning BAR Safari in 30-06 without the BOSS system. I want a semi-auto for deer and moose hunting in the bush here in Ontario. I had a new Remington 750 Woodsmaster in my posession for about 2 days and then I sent it back for a refund, fit and finish and quality was very poor!!!

Are the Browning Bar Safari's good accurate guns? I know I want a steel receiver and walnut stocks so this is pretty much my only choice left besides the Benelli R1 and thats out of the question. (BAR is at the top of my budget)

This is exactly my big game setup topped with a Leupold vx1 2-7 33mm scope.

The rifle is very accurate with factory or hand loads; I have printed 5 shot groups under 1 moa @100 yards when prepping for the current season. The rifle's accuracy is limited by my shooting ability.

However, that steel and walnut it is quite heavy but you seem willing to make that sacrifice. I've found the finish and engraving to be very nice but delicate - although problems with the finish's durability would be my fault.

Most BAR owners like them.

I have experience with both Remington and Browning Semi's, and the Brownings are better quality. They also tend to have better accuracy.

Both are fine for general hunting, as long as you take care of them.

If you have your heart set on a semi, the BAR is a good choice. I have had a few over the years, and never once had a problem with any of them, other than being a bit on the heavy side.

Another few semi-autos out there are the Benelli R1, Merkel SR1 or the Sauer S303. Any of these would also be good choices. Run fast, and far from the Remington stuff.

I love my BAR

I love my BAR (30-06) lightweight. Problem is, I hate taking into bush because it gets scratched. Went out and bought a M14 semi (308) and a Remington 7600 pump (.243). Now they are my new best friends. One for general bush stuff, and the other for varmints (pump).

Either way to answer your question, you won't go wrong with a BAR. Just a little pricy.

My father and I both hunted with BARs for quite a long time (me 308, dad 30-06). Plenty of game in the bag with those - deer, moose, and caribou.

His is for sale - check the link in my signature.

Good thing you gave back your Remington auto, they truly are crap (personal experience with 3 of them). I have always wanted a BAR, lots of nice ones on EE at reasonable prices. I don't hunt with autos anymore as I find it safer and easier to load or unload the bolt actions when hunting in rugged terrain. I also still don't trust them not to jam, missfire, etc. The M14 action is the only one I trust.

Used one in 30'06 for almost 30 years. A second clip is a great way to carry 4 shells. Recently tried several bolt actions - Brno, Sako, Ruger which were all a bit more accurate (1 moa or better vs about 1 1/2) but I find I shoot better in the field with the Browning. I think the noticeably low recoil helps and if you need a second shot everything stays lined up. They are a bit heavy, barrel heavy actually, which probably helps in the field accuracy wise. When I first got it I thought the comb was too low but for some reason I have been able to shoot more consistently with the BAR than with the more accurate rifles.

BAR are really good, you won't go wrong with one. I've tried them all, and overall the brownings are the best.
