Hey, question for the BLR owners. Picked up a nice used post 81 in. 308. Love it. Came with a scope but removed it because I wanted a nice bush gun. Only issue is sighting it in at 50yards it shoots crazy high (approx 17" )with the rear sight as low as it will go. Shooting 150g core lokd. I'm tempted to put a new taller fiber optic dovetail on it. Anyone else have this issue? If so, what did you do? Not a fan of red dot.

you can replace the rear sight or lower the front- there are blades and elevators available- but I have a question- why are you using it for 50 yards-?- that's away short yardage for the 308wcf- my load for the 308 is 165-180 grains , 2650 fps, and sighted in for 250-275 yards- great gun, but you're not using it to its full potential- you want a bush gun, go to the sks - that thing loves open sights- and I have a 4x12x40 and bipod on my 99- I know that's a long range rig, but look at what the current snipers are using-

A few things to check:

> Is the front sight original? It might have been replaced with a lower post
> Have you tried it with various types of ammo? Rifles will pattern differently with differnt ammo (although 17" high consistently is extreme)
> Are you confident you are aligning the sights correctly - This is common as Browning sights aren't exactly highly visible (the fibre optic front is a huge benefit if you get one) With my 3 BLRs I have the front bead / fibre buried in the notch so the top of the bead is level with the top of the U. All are very accurate. If you are holding the bead even 1/2 above the top of the notch you will be easily off 12-24 inches at 50 yards: this is what it should look like:

Bury that ball in the bucket!

Good info from DTM5

I had that issue when trying to get a peep sight to work, because peeps are taller and raise the sight axis.

The stock front sight should measure somewhere around .450" from bottom of dovetail to top of bead.

I went with a Skinner lo-pro peep, because I am uncomfortable with a ~.7" front sight.

Why not use a 308 for a bush gun? It's perfect for that and anything longer if the need comes up.

Also, the 50yds is a good place to start if sighting in or doing load work, in fact I start at 25 then go to 50 and then to 100. If he's getting 17" high at 50, he'll be off the paper at 100 and won't have any idea what he's up against.

I'm an experienced shooter and lining up as you have indicated. Just consistently shooting high. Wanted to see what other have been doing. Thx for the info!

Where I live I dont need a distance rifle. I know the BLR is more than capable of a lot more. I hunt a lot of areas that are thick Bush and want a heavy hitter.

With original sights there should be plenty of adjustment left at 50 yards. Most likely the OP has a rifle with non original sights or something else is wrong with it.
