Years ago when I was doing gun repair , a friend of mine from Alberta brought me a BLR that an acquaintance of his shot the transmission in his vehicle with. He had the gun pointed inside and was lowering the hammer (I know dumb thing ) the hammer slipped and the gun went off leaving him to walk a few miles.
The half #### is intended to catch the hammer if it slips from the thumb(as long as the trigger is not held down) this one would not catch no matter which way it was released. I took it apart and someone had been dicking with it. There wer grind marks at the base of the hammer. I suspected it was out a tooth on the gear mechanism but it took me several tries at reassembly(which was a #####) to get it right. I got the half #### to catch and it worked OK.

If you have a good mechanical ability, disassembly it, clean it, inspect the half #### notch for debris/damage. If you don't have good mech ability, send it to a gunsmith that has a reputation of working on the BLR. It is NOT a amateur gunsmith repairable rifle.
