What do you guys recommend? I had an 870, but I wasn't a big fan of the weight and ergos. I'm left-handed. So I'm considering the M500, BPS, and Ithaca 37.

I know a lefty with a BPS that is very happy with it. he went with it so the empty's wouldn't be spit out in front of his face.

Try them all, pick the one that feels best.

Weight of the BPS I'm not a fan of....the ergo I find it hard to beat as a south paw shooter myself. I also owned an Ithaca 37 it's light but didn't fit me as nice as the BPS does.

What are you going to use it for? Duck/Goose? Upland game? If only for Duck and Goose go BPS for sure as the weight of the BPS comes in handy when shooting the heavy loads. Upland only get an older Ithaca 37. If going both I'd take a look at getting a new Ithaca 37 that you can load up 2-3/4 lead up to the 3" steel and has interchangeable chokes as I do believe they are a little lighter just not sure how much lighter. Just make sure you know the new Ithaca's are just over $1k last I looked vs the $800 for the BPS.

Good luck.

How about the Mossberg 500? Lefty friendly ergos. The ejection port being on the right doesn't really affect me since it's so much further in front of my face.

The Mossberg 500 is not even in the same class as the other 2 guns you listed, if you are looking at a mossberg step up to the 535 combos at least or even better the 835 Ulti-mag.

I'm very happy with my bps. My favorite gun in layout blind hunts, cuz the empty shells stay in the bind with you after ejected. It's a little heavier than my 870, but it helps with the recoil. Very smooth pumping action, and has never jammed on me ever, no matter what brand of shells. My 870 can be finicky with some shell brands, hanging up in the chamber.

A tip for you though. If you're only ever going to shoot 3" shells, only buy the 3" chamberd model. I bought the 3 1/2" chambered model, and I never shoot 3 1/2" shells, but the the gun has a little longer pump stroke for the longer chamber. If I had to buy again, I'd get the 3", for the little shorter stroke. I've got the 28" barrel, w/ duckblind camo. Love it!

And get yourself a Kick's high flyer "MOD" choke for it. Deadly patterns with #4 steel 3" inch kent @ 1475 ft/sec. It's a duck swatter for sure bro!
Beats all the other chokes I've tested for this gun/load.

I had an 870 Express Right-Handed, It was alright. The ergos were okay as I adapted to them, but I felt the Express just didn't do it for me. I considered a Wingmaster, used one, but I wanted to try some other brands first. I didn't like the finish on the Express either as it was hard to use a gun cloth on it since the roughness would chew up the rag.

Plus most guns now come with 3 chokes, and the Express only had the 1 MOD. Wasn't really all that much gun for the money in retrospect.

I like the BPS its like a beefed Ithaca with dual action bars. My only complaint about them is their length of pull its too long for me. Oh, also with bottom ejection you'll quickly learn not to wear sandals when shooting one loaded shell into your toes will teach you.

Watching some vidoes of the bps ejection, it's so powerful and fast. Like it spits the shell out so fast you can't even see it on the video. And if you eject it facing up, the shell flies ilke 5 ft in the air.

If you haven't tried it in person it's more impressive when it jumps off your boot as you feel the impact. I love doing it with the High brass rounds they just keep spinning and half the time land standing up due to the extra weight from the brass. :D

BPS is well worth getting reason I have one in 3" Duck Blind Mossy with a 28" barrel in my Safe. Love the gun only take it out though when I'm looking for something a 3" 12 gauge is required for though. I like lighter guns personally though and use my 28 Gauge SxS for everything else. Miss the Ithaca 37 I had before. As someone mention the BPS is a beefed up 37 and as I have owned both I totally agree with them. Either or both would make a good addition to your safe.

As for the other shotguns mentioned here the Mossberg 500 No experience with that gun and the Remington Express Left hand. Well it is left hand I would recommend you just forget about that gun. I've looked at 2 different ones NIB and both of them were horrible. Finish on both were thin and rough one had rust on the barrel and action and they didn't cycle HALF as smooth as the BPS or the old Ithaca 37.

If your not closed to the idea I would also look at getting a SxS or O/U's also some come with chokes. Classic and holds 2 rounds and you get that second round off faster then with a pump almost every time. I have a couple SxS also that work great for me.

Hope that helped and good luck hunting up a gun you like. Only word of advice that any of us can truly give you is go to a store and ask to hold the guns and cycle the action and see if it fits you....FIT is Very important if it doesn't fit you you will hate shooting the gun no matter how much you love it's lines.

You're absolutely right.

Now why is the synthetic version of the BPS more than the hunter version with nice walnut? Is there any difference in weight and handling between the synthetic and walnut versions?

The syth Stalker model is 3.5" while the standard Hunter model is 3".

I had a BPS it was ok for ducks etc, but if using it for upland game it was a little heavy. Also it is a little tricky to change the round in the chamber quitely. With an 870 or a similar side eject you can open the action remove the round from the chamber and insert another without the round in the mag coming out. With the BPS you have to eject the round in the chamber, load the one from the mag (assuming mag is full) insert the round you want in the chamber into the mag and cycle again. Minor point but can be an issue in some cases. ie bird hunting see a coyote or larger game. If side ejection bothers a lefty, a left handed action is available or do as I did and install a left hand safety button on your 870. Just my .02.

For those of you that think that loading a single shell is not possible directly into the chamber or is too hard, well you haven't seen this video. That argument is no longer valid after you watch this video. There are 3 ways to easily load a single shell into the chamber without have to use the magazine tube.
