Hi Folks

Need you help trying to decide between a whether to purchase a new browning buckmark .22 pistol or an early 1970's challenger in very nice shape(with the shorter 4.5" barrel) looking to use pistol for general plinking and target shooting.

Please let me know what you think is the better choice old vs. new, price wise the challenger is a little more economical

Let me know

Kris

Which one fits your hand better? Parts for a Challenger, including aftermarket grips, may be an issue. Should you ever need any.

I don't know much about the Buckmark but I have a Challenger. The Challenger is a fabulous, utterly reliable, ergonomic pistol. Mine is on the "Never Sell" list.

I own a 5.5" Challenger and have found it extremely accurate and reliable. I've not owned a Buckmark myself but have noticed a few other shooters in our club having the occasional jam with them. If it were me I'd go for the Challenger.

They are both very nice guns and will serve their purpose well, but there is no comparison with those beautifully made and finished old Belgian Brownings compared to the newer versions. If you have a choice,go for the older gun,you wont regret it.

Dont worry too much about parts availability(you can still find them if you need to,but they are pricey),I have 3 of the old Brownings(a Nomad, challenger and Medalist),and have put many rounds through them over the years and never have had a part break. They have also been very reliable

I bought a browning buckmark urx about 6 months months ago, its the one with a stainless steel slabsided barrel and slide and finger grooves in the grip.

since new i've put at least 3000 rounds and about 8 different brands of ammo without a single firering issue of any kind i highly reccomend a new buckmark.

but with that said i've also never heard anything bad about the old browning except for part availability

The older all steel guns cannot be beat. They are more rugged, better finished and will likely last forever with proper care. The newer models made by most of the major manufacturers use pot metal, plastic and aluminium parts and cannot hope to last as long as the old ones. If you can buy a Browning Challenger, or Medalist for a good price you will be happy.

I bought a buckmark camper, all black, used. No idea of round count but it is totally reliable with all the cheap ammo I put throught it and feels amazing in my hand. Very solid feeling. Think I paid $290 used and its my fav pistol, of which I have many.

The only advantages the new Buckmarks have over the old Challengers are that magazines are easier to find and the side mounted magazine release instead of a heel type one. Other than that, the older guns are nicer, as seems to be the norm with most sporting firearms these days.
