Was offered a Browning today, and was looking for an estimated value, unfortunately I have no pic's, but I would rate it at 90%. I am guessing its 35-40 yrs old but has hardly been used. Bore is nice and shiny with great rifling and the action is tight, and the checkering is nice and sharp.
Here is the info I got off the original box

Browning - 78
Single Shot
30-06
26 in. Med. octagon barrel

I know nothing about this kind of rifle, but noticed there is no half ####, is this normal??

I've never needed any, so I can't really say. The one thing they are known for is a complex trigger. I believe Canjar used to make a replacement but I have zero experience with those. IIRC you have to be careful when adjusting the trigger and I also seem to recall that the trigger adjustment screws were sealed at the factory. Anyways, I am sure someone more experienced will be able to chime in about the trigger / trigger adjustment issues. And I also believe that there is a half-#### position on that rifle.

Many I have handled had their triggers messed with. With the factory assembly instructions, you can fix the trigger issues fairly easily.

Hmmmmm thats the one thing I noticed, is it did not have a half cocked position. Trigger was also silver, many I had seen in the past were gold.

The half-#### on these rifles is there but it is just barley up off the dropped position. Also, The hammer can't be dropped all the way down unless the trigger is pulled without any thumb pressure on the hammer.

Well this one did not have any half ####. I am guessing then someone messed with it and never got it working properly.

Here is a few pictures showing hammer position on Browning 1885

The 78 Highwall has a different trigger than the 1885 - much more complicated, 21 pieces versus 12 on the 1885. The hammer position is similar though the 78 will allow the hammer to be "thumb-dropped" past the half-#### position.
