looking at getting a browning gold autoloading 12g, websites say it can handls 2-3/4 and 3 inch "FIELD LOADS"

what are field loads?

can I Shoot a slug out of it still?

Thanks

Yes you can shoot slugs out of it and it will handle most target loads as well.

I had one for a couple of years but then traded it (believe it or not) for a Baikal MP-153, which will also handle 3.5" loads. The Baikal retails for around $600 and i love it.

Anyway, back to the gold a beautiful gun to look at and they work just fine.

If it is gold you are looking for, now would be a good time. There is rumor that that this may be the last year that Browning will offer the gold in a standard field gun and they are going to exapnd the cheaper silver line which is a gold without the speed feed and mag cut off. Mechanically the silver is the same as a win sx-2, sx-3 which is even more economical. The gold evolve that you asked about on another thread is not even shown in the 2008 catalog.

I have a 3" 12g Browning Gold and love it! (Bought used from the EE)

She'll handle light target loads all the way up to powerful slugs due to the self regulating gas valve. Like any autoloader its good to give her a decent cleaning after a hunt or a few hundred shells, but this only takes five minutes and I've not had a hiccup yet.

I've had a Gold as well but sold it to my father-in-law. Had to get him shooting somehow! Anyways, it handles anything we feed it with out a problem; it is a very very good gun.

And to answer your other question: field loads are shells used for hunting. They typically have more "oumph" than a target load. Some reduced recoil target loads with light payloads may not cycle the action - although my Gold cycled 7/8 oz loads just fine.
