Browning Hi-Power 9mm

Wanstall's in Maple Ridge - $980

A;) further few questions if you don't mind. The 'Chinese' model with the tangent rear sight;
  • Is it also known as an Englis?
  • Was the tangent rear sight model ever made for issue to the Canadian military?
  • Was the tangent rear sight model ever factory coated with an armaloy like finish?
  • Last but not least, was the Englis model, available to the Canadian military only available with the 'hump like' rear sight?
The reason I ask is a (Chinese model) tangent rear sight model was at the recent Duncan show:confused: but in my opinion, the coating is an indication it's been 'diddled' with from the original factory production run. I could well be wrong but I've never seen one factory finished like that.

9 mm inglis high power

The Canadian made Inglis pistol with the tangent sight was initially produced for use by Chinese Nationalist forces, very few reached them in China, the majority were issued to Commonwealth forces during the war, after the war most of the tangent sight High Powers were offered as military aid to countries such as Belgium and Holland our NATO allies that required post WW2 re- equipping. Belgium was known to rebuild and refinish the inglis pistols to the FN standard with an enamalized grey Suncorite type finish and replace the tangent sights with a machined piece used to replace the rear sight. The UK also had a similar method of refurbishing their Inglis pistols, some of these have come back to Canada as surplus and you sometimes see an example at a gun show. The Canadian Navy had lots passed onto them by the Army as rejects as the Army only wanted the MK2* T series version with hump rear sight. There was a program in the late 60's to convert the earlier tangent sight ones over to MK2* standard by machining a slot at the rear of the sight and silver soldering a hump backed piece in it's place then re-finishing the pistol. Lots of people on here to fill in the extra details.

There was one of these at the Armour School when I was posted there from 2005-2008. Here's a pic I took of the markings. Unfortunately I didn't get a pic of the mod to the rear sight that gladius described, though it was exactly as he said.

Try Bashaw Sports. Just google the name for their website and contact info. I was down there yesterday and they have one on sale for $799 (Mark III with plactic grips) also have the wood grip model there but I never checked the price on those. Better hurry up though cause I'm heading back that way next week and if it's still there I'm picking it up...along with that 870 Wingmaster! LOL!

There are two choices when looking for a Browning, either commercial or military. The fit and finish is better on a commercial one. They generally have a better extractor, and some models have a good adjustable sight. The Inglis guns come in more variations, and have an undeniable Canadian heritage connection. Lots were "lost" or surplused from Canadian service. Others have come home after foreign military engagements. Prices used to be under $400, but that was thirty years ago. Regardless of which model, they have always been desireable and more pricey than the competition.

Good fortune smiled upon me today:). A long time shooting buddy brought me a treasure to our coffee meeting this morning. A book, actually a booklet, titled "The Inglis-Browning Hi-Power Pistol":cool:. Good info on variations and accessories of the Inglis:).

Johnn, how much did they want for the one at the Duncan show? I missed that show, I must have been working on the honeydew list.

$700.oo as I recall. Considering the condition and what 'may' be an after market coating, to me............, it seemed a little high. The guy also had a S&W model 39, I'd estimate to be in 95% - 98% condition, for a decent price. $250.oo I believe.
