Hey, hive mind.
I've been shooting this rifle in hunting and competition for c. 45 years now. It's a lovely thing. It's one of the pencil-barreled rifles, so very trim and light. Shoots like a damn.
I've been trying to sort out a date of manufacture using various online sources but the info they offer doesn't seem to fit the serial number on this rifle. It's an FN produced piece, not the Sako. Very much a 98 Mauser in her bones. Serial is "L49*", where the * is a third number.
Always assumed the "L" stood for "lightweight", but I reckon that's incorrect. Browning likes throwing letters in the serial to denote DOM, but from what I can find, there isn't anything that matches what I have.
Ideas? And while we're at it, value on a well-preserved and cared for but used one of these?
