I have an xbolt stainless stalker that has stripped threads in the receiver. I inquired today about having them tapped one size bigger but was told by gunsmith that it wasn't really doable because the holes are too close to the edge of the receiver and also on the scope bases. He suggested that the screws could be epoxied in but he wasn't too eager to do it that way. Any suggestions on how I could correct the problem for a reasonable price??
Thanks.

There might be a problem if all of them are stripped. Did you strip them or it came like that from factory?

If it was mine I would rebore and thread to 8-40, assuming they are 6-48. If one is too close to the edge, leave it. Your gunsmith should have all needed to perform this work, including a counterbore for the base.

All four holes stripped! All four holes are close to an edge...Are you sure the holes are stripped and not just the screws? Going to 8x40 will not work. It's going to be a bit of a challenge. It isn't going to be fixed on this forum. Any idea how they all got stripped? Lets us know the outcome.

All are stripped, amateur gunsmithing is to blame lol.
I though if it was possible to get blank bases, to drill new holes in the center of the receiver to have it similar to a m70 for example...

that is the route I would go, sounds better than relying on epoxy...I know you can buy blank base stock for hand guns and custom mounts, if the gunsmith has the tooling to fit the blank to the xbolt action? or murphy precision I know does custom bases, maybe ask if they can center drill the mounting holes, and then have your gunsmith drill and tap after you have your custom scope base in hand....either route you go, sounds like it'll be an expensive lesson to swallow

will be very interesting to see the final outcome

You can use the base with 4 holes already in it... ignore the existing holes and drill two more where you want them to be...

I would suggest using a 'smith' experienced in drilling and tapping...

Hmmmm, thanks...looks like that's the ticket !! The gunsmith I contacted didn't want anything to do with helping me, seemed to have a genuine hate for the rifle in question and anyone who worked on rifles with proper education.
Cheers.

A picture of the screws would sure help.
How much torque would have to be applied?
Amateur Gunsmith . . . there is no such thing!
Phone guntech first and then ship it to him.
Go with the best! I won't say what to do with the rest!
