UPDATE: It has an FRT already, restricted.

I just found these receiver sets from Billet Rifle Systems in America. Basically it’s an upper and lower similar to the AR15 but it takes AK mags. On the companies’ website it specifically says that this will not work with a standard AR15 upper (although the pins might be in the same place) because the lower has a different magwell for the AK magazine and the upper is widened to accept them. These also require their own specific BRS47 BCG to operate. Seems like it should get a non-restricted classification with 18.5” barrels as it’s own manufacturer has explicitly layed out these operating instructions.

Looks like it hasn’t made its way into Canada yet... can any dealers way in? These would be a good NR 7.62x39 alternative with lots of options for customizing barrel, hand guards etc...! They’ve got a ton of Cerakote options available for it as well.

From the website (follow link): NOTE: BRS47 Lower receivers will NOT function with Mil-Spec upper receivers as the AK47 magazine will interfere with the upper receiver. To build a BRS47, you will need to use the BRS47 Upper Receiver as it is manufactured to accept the larger AK47 Magazine width.
BRS47 Lowers and uppers also require the use of the BRS47 Bolt Carrier Group. Mil-Spec carriers with a 7.62x39 bolt will NOT work. The Billet Rifle Systems BRS47 BCG is designed and manufactured to work specifically with AK47 magazines.

The way the Firearms Lab works, an importer better have deep pockets to be able to live doing something else waiting for the RCMP to issue an FRT number. There are cases of guns submitted for approval taking years. By then the market may have moved on.

Two things might work against the BRS - it has AK-like parts and AR-like parts. Neither one will make many friends in the Firearms Lab.
