i have a bsa single shot falling block in 22 lr that i am thinking of having reamed out to 22 mag for little other reason then its a whim, cheaper then buying a new rifle and i ahve plenty of 22 lr's. 1: are there any reasons why this might not be a reasonable idea?? 2: what sort of damage would the 22 mag do to a road chicken?? 3: and would i still be able able to use 22 lr in it??
thanks

A Martini action you mean?

No you wouldn't be able to use LR in it.
Chamber is quite a bit larger in diameter. Bore dimensions are a bit smaller than the usual for a 22WMR too, though the action would handle the pressure OK.

It'll make more of a mess than you need, if you really want to eat what you are shooting.

If it has a decent factory barrel in it, it'd be a shame to #### with it, really. The factory barrels were about as good a barrel as has ever been put on a target rifle. They were not supposed to leave the factory if they would not shoot less than an inch at 100 yards.

Buy a decent barrel and have it installed. It'll take a bit of fiddling with the extractor as well when it's chambered. Track down both a barrel and an extractor, and you could make it a convertible.

Or just buy a 22 Mag.

Sell the BSA as is, and you could buy quite a nice one with the proceeds, I think. If it's in decent shape, anyway.

Cheers

Bsa .22

As mentioned, you could sell your BSA .22 rifle and buy a new .22 Magnum and should still have change left for some ammo.

Another factor is that the barrels of .22 rifles chambered for the .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge tend to be slightly smaller than barrels chambered for the .22 Magnum. This raises pressures when fired due to the tighter bore diameter.

A problem might be the loading of the rifle. The falling block Martini action has a sloped groove on top of the breech block. With the longer .22 magnum cartridge, it just might jam up when trying to insert it into the chamber.

Many of these rifles were used by the Canadian Military for training purposes. Check it over for markings, especially a "broad arrow" or a "Broad Arrow with a C" stamped on the rifle, or on the wood of the butt stock. If so, then the value has increased even more if it is in the original calibre.

Your BSA Martini is much more valuable to you in it's original form, and if you convert it, it will be worth a LOT less.

sounds good guys i'll definatly be leaving it as is and if i remember correctly it does have a broad arrow with a c on the stock. sorry sillymike i am not goin to part ways with this rifle i've got some pretty good memories associated with it.

sorry i forgot to take a full pic as i was getting right p o ed with the crappy camera i was using. anyways there is a bit of a story with this rifle and me. my shooting coach from air cadets owned it before me he managed to find this gem in with the de acted training aids from the local gun club and bought it from them for $60 and sold it to me for the same price :D i remember shooting this rifle and loving it when we went to the range as civies and could shoot something other then c7 and anschutz rifles that we could only shhot when there as cadets. i looked around for a long time for one of these rifles that i could afford and couldn't do it untill the light bulb when off and asked him if he would be wil to sell it to me and i just about lost my mind when he stated the price he was willing to sell it for, the same as he paid for it. damn i am one happy man i just hope that oneday i move back to where there are gophers
