Anyone else shoot one of these?

I noticed that the stock looked like it was clearanced to free float but there was contact. I pulled the stock off the gun and noticed that there is a dovetail in the bottom of the barrel near the chamber with a threaded insert slid into it, this is the only method to hold the stock on.

Has anyone else floated the barrel from that point forward? Was this originally what they had done from the factory?

This gun used to be a tack driver, I just put a new scope on it and have not sighted it in again yet but I am curious if anyone else shoots one.

BSA SS5 i think you will find it shoots great being 'free floated'
Can't remember what they were bedded like when new, but on mine
any pressure on the barrel buggers up the accuracy.
Great little rifle, don't see many any more.

The chamber area is where the gun bolts down into the stock, when I tightened things up the muzzle end actually lifted off the stock a bit. You can see the inlay in the stock where the barrel looks like it was supposed to float I think.

I have to sight it in again with the new scope, I hope to shoot it this weekend if the wind is not too crazy here.

I took it apart again and floated the barrel out from where the barrel mounts to the stock, it was almost floated all the way, just 1 little spot near the muzzle. This rifle is built like a full size rifle, heavy barrel and full wood stock, very accurate rifle.

A small "push up" contact point near the muzzle is quite common. It tends to help with sporter weight barrel shot to shot consistency. - dan

It was not that sort of pressure point, the stock under the barrel did not contact it was slightly off to the side and about an inch to 2 inches back from the muzzle.
