Anyone have any favorite recipies using 70gr Ballistic Tips in the .243? I've only loaded 100gr hunting rounds so far. These are going to be for my wife to use punching paper. (She wanted the BT's because she likes the 'pretty purple tips'.:D ) Looking for best accuracy with minimal recoil. I have tried three loads with IMR4064, best so far is a hair over 1". I'll try a couple more charge weights with the 4064 and see how that goes. I also have some IMR4350 on hand. Is it worth trying or is it too slow for the 70g pills? Any and all experiences welcomed.

Thanks!:dancingbanana:

42 grains RL15 or Varget is max for about 3500 f/s in a 24" tube. You can back off this a few grains for lower recoil and blast, should still shoot excellent. H4895 would be another good powder for the 243/70 gr, and it responds well to lower charge weights. 4350 should work too but you're gonna be burning more powder, although pressure should be less. I used 4350 with 87 gr Vmax with good results, along with Varget/RL15

IMR4350(40.0 to 45.5) will do nicely for a 70 grain bullet My Lyman book gives it for one of the accuracy loads, but your rifle may not like 70 grain bullets much.
The rifling twist is important with the .243. 70 grain bullets require a slow twist. 1 in 12, for example. Most commercial hunting rifles are rifled for heavy bullets(85 grains and up). 1 in 9 or 9.25.

Thanks for the tips. IIRC my twist is 1:10 in a 22"bbl. Again, these are just for paper so they don't need to be smokin'. Would either RL15 or varget be useful in a .270 or .303? Those are the only others I load for.

they'd be excellent in the 303, and useable in the 270 but for optimum performance a slower burning powder that fills up the case up will give better velocity
