Still here.
I hate it when I lose stuff but I have loved and apparently lost a BUCK Model 321 Bird Knife, the perfect tool for field dressing ruffed grouse and woodcock. Looking online, I see Buck stopped making them back in the early 1990s but caught mention that other makers had similar models. Gut removal hooks seem to have been very popular in the 80s as compared to now, hoping someone here knows where such a knife is still being sold.

Puma knives

Good tip, using that I dug out the Puma SGB Birdknife being sold on Amazon.com, can't be shipped to Canada and of course the border is closed right now. It doesn't have the same specialized blade as the Buck, but that could be regarded as a good thing and I've certainly done the job with big Randalls, etc. .

On the Amazon search page, I came across the Boker 93H Bird Hunter w/Hook, which unlike the other two actually has a lanyard ring, the lack of which seems to have doomed my good old Buck version; however it ain't being sent here either. The blade is halfway between the Buck and the Puma, might go with that one although it costs about $25 more, and that's in US funds.

Case Bird Hunter
You'll like it even more than your Buck knive.

Another good alternative, but like the others sold out or otherwise unavailable in Canada.

Swiss Army Hunter

Not at all what I'm looking for. I have lots of knives like that, looking for the specialized type of tool in the photos, the gut hook being the defining feature. You can use a cut twig, but the hook is more elegant and stuff.

Curious, OP, didjah dare venture pewt'in yer mitt down the sides awf the couch?
You know, pawpcorn, pennies, Lego pieces'n chit gravitittied down there?
Maybe your berd knife found it's way down there?
What'bout yer hunt'in rig?
Seats seem tuh swaller up bunch'oh stuff when they git tugether wid gravity.

Floor of the closet is also a good bet, Looky, but nobody's seen that in years. Seriously however, yeah it may turn up but I did keep it in a relatively unsecured pocket of my olde fashioned upland game coat (button flap, but the knife could go around it as if through butter), and it went missing before the start of last season so things are not looking good.

With shipping that comes out to about CAN$120 for a visibly used knife I originally paid $20 for new, so the asking price isn't acceptable, but I'll try putting a bid on it if I can figure out the process, thanks for the find. Edit: and there's still the worry about getting it through Canada Customs, "slim point stealth dagger with hook for pulling out human eyeballs."

how exactly does the hook work?

Simple, you use the hook to pull the guts and internal organs out of the opening you've made in the vent of the bird or at the genitals of the small game animal. It works quite well and the hook is easy to clean and all. The delicacy of the operation on a bird means you want a nice slim and pointed clip blade, the Buck really was perfect. Doing the whole thing in the field on a freshly killed bird, squirrel or rabbit means quicker cooling and better tasting meat, it's also probably safer to get any possible pierced intestines out ASAP but that's not a major thing.

Cripes, this thread brings back childhood memories.
Ol`Paw yewsed to use a twig with the right crook in it.
Shuvv'd it up dem Chukars pawsterre derriere and pulled dem inners'owt.

On nudder note, I lost a nice Buck flat folding knife at least trice in me life.
Last time it was gone 20 + years.
Missus found it at the outlaws condo when cleaning up her mom's estate.
I guess it slipped out of me pawkitt and was found by her mom and put in
a living room end table drawer.
Still have it now after all these years.

Hope you find it Bee-Bee.

Thanks L, we walked through a lot of thorns and blackberries together, that knife and I, and hooked a fair amount of guts. But it was just a knife after all. The twig thing, I mentioned it earlier and it can be done alright.

About the 'other methods,' doing a neat job means you arrive home with a nice elegant looking bird and not something that's been torn in half and stuff. Or if not for showing off purposes, it's more respectful to the game, too.
