Buckmark Rifle debate

Good day,

Long story short I was on leave and went wandering through most of the local Guns Store, and well I found a BNIB Buckmark rifles for 859$ and was debating buying it, it the model with a standard wood stock and bull barrel.

So I had a few questions,

1 is 859 the new price for those as last I checked they where in the low to mid 700?

2 are they actually worth the money ?

3 any dealer have mag for those as I can't seem to find any in stock ?

not $800 interesting but interesting none the less.

i have heard of a few guys who run them and also the buckmark pistols for doing 22 challanges so they can use the same mags in either.

short of that ive only handled one once and while it was nice i found it kinda gimmicky.
lets not lie to each other here, its just a buckmark pistol with a butt added onto it and a longer barrel.

other side of the coin - i have a buckmark pistol and its by far the best 22 pistol i own for accuracy and dependability.

so im on the fence about them.
ill never buy one but im interested.
browning bi-curious i guess you can mark me down as.
 
I own a sporter buckmark rifle. If it's in your price range then I say get it. The main reason I bought one is because of the extra long LOP. They come from the factory at 15", which makes them the only factory rifle to fit me properly. The controls can be hard to reach if you have smaller hands and you're trying to use them with your trigger hand. Not a problem if you use your off hand.

One of the best pros about it, and the reasoning might seem silly to some, is the giant loop behind the action. The loop makes it perfect for attaching it to your backpack via a carabiner. I've even just ran the chest strap on my pack through the loop.

They are handy and accurate little rifles. The mags are easy to find, because they share the same mag as Buckmark pistols, most retailers that stock mags carry them... and as said above, they are nice pack rifles.
 
I have a Buck Mark Sporter that my wife has recently laid claim to as her go-to .22 for the gopher patch. They are awesome little .22s. As accurate as any .22 that I have shot (barring benchrest accurate bolt actions) and definitely as accurate as you would ever need for small game/plinking/varmint and pest shooting. I find the trigger to be fine but definitely not a sub 2 lb. target trigger. The shorter barrel makes them somewhat compact but still plenty long enough for accuracy and decent velocity. the fiber optic sights on the sporter are great as well. so much so that my wife has resisted my attempts to mount a scope on the gun! lol

The reliability is actually quite amazing for a semi-automatic .22; at least in my experience thus far. It has gone close to 1000 rounds between cleanings without a hiccup. I can honestly say that I have, as of yet, not had a single gun-related failure or stoppage in almost 2000 rounds. That said, the only ammo it sees is American Eagle 38 gr. hollow points and CCI mini-mag hollow points. I'm not sure how it performs with cheaper bulk ammo but I have not had great experiences with bulk ammo on gophers so I tend not to buy it anyway.

All in all, they are great little rifles. Compact, reliable accurate and fun to shoot. Not cheap but good quality guns for a reputable manufacturer. I was tempted to get one of the heavy barreled versions but quite honestly I don't think the added weight will come with any tangible benefits. I may just get another Sporter for myself.

Oh, the one quirk about these rifles is the mag release button. In its pistol form, the mag release is easily pushed with your right thumb but the design of the stock interferes with reaching the mag release with the right thumb; so you have to get used to hitting the mag release wit your left hand. It’s not a big deal at all, as most rimfire semis need the mag release to be hit with the left hand anyway, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I’d say buy one and don’t look back. Just don’t pay that much for one. Definitely shop around. A few Forum sponsors have them in stock as well as Wholesale Sports.
 
I have the Buckmark Sporter. Love it. I would buy it again.
Many of the good points have been mentioned above.
I do get some fail to eject with the Remington Bucket of Bullets cheap bulk, but other ammo it works fine. The Bucket of Bullets performs the same fails in my other semi's also, so it is the ammo, not the Buckmark's at issue.
Short, handy, very comfortable holding position, light, and EASY to load magazines. The factory glow sights are good, and wifey really likes it with a TRS25 on it for plinking. I prefer the Sporter over the bull barrel as it is very nice for off-hand shooting and well balanced, and the factory sights do well. I was thinking of putting a scope on it initially, but it is too much fun and comfortable as is.
Accuracy is very good and it does not dissappoint.

They are hard to find, and supply seems to come and go. I had to look for awhile to get mine.

Thanks everyone for the input, I'm glad I didn't buy it at 859$, even though I was very tempted, I guess I will shop around and see which version I buy.

Very cool looking guns~I've fondled many of them...but have never shot one. Being a Browning, you're just going to pay more but I'd have every confidence you're getting a quality gun. Like wayupnorth~the idea of a long barrel/pistol/carbine strikes me as being slightly gimmicky, BUT, there really isn't' anything else like it out there....it will likely hold it's value...and be tons of fun to use. $700-$800 worth? That's your call. I'm a bolt action fan, so the wrong guy to be chiming in. Were $ no object, I'd have probably bought one to play with by now. :)

Google Heggis flip if you are after a lighter trigger pull, lots of info on rimfire central and a few vids on the net, i owned one for many years and flipped the trigger spring with zero issues.

Have the sported version with a Weaver 3-9 AO. Very accurate, handy and a conversation piece at the range. Had mine in the gopher patch a few times. One negative is that they have the tendency to spit back due to the chamber being open on both sides. Not an issue on the pistol as it's held a good distance from the face. Glasses should be worn anytime shooting, but are a "must" with the BMR.
 
Got play with one for a while... A whole lot of fun :) reasonably accurate, reliable... don't forget to wear eye protection. Depending on ammo, you might get hit with some powder residue.
