Hey guys, wondering what choke or if you use a choke with buckshot?

Last week I was out killing some paper and testing patterning with various loads, chokes, gauges, and distances.

When shooting buckshot I was quite impressed with the Patternmaster SR (short range)
9 pellet 00 grouped 5-6" at 30 yrds!

However, it felt like the pellets were raking past the unique "stud ring" positioned inside the choke. It was a strange sensation. I first thought the muzzle ripped apart. Lol!

It performed well, and it states 00 buckshot is fine though the the choke. But the "raking" aspect is a little...off putting

I've got this choke incoming, so I'm hoping it performs as well.

Anybody have experience with this choke, or other chokes for the tightest possible buckshot patterns?

My Baikal MP153 patterns buckshot incredibly tight with a Pattern Master Code Black Goose choke. The studs strip wads and I doubt they are actually raking the buck shot in your loads. All the buck shot I used was in shot cup type wads. I don't know how naked shot would do. I any event it would put all nine Winchester low recoil 00 buck pellets into the bottom of a coffee can at 20 yards.

If that's the Carlson buckshot choke I have one one on the way. I've had excellent results with #4 Buck and the Mod RemChoke, but I've found that as the diameter of the buck increases I've gotten better results with less choke. IC gave great results with Fed 132-1B but they were FliteControl so that may have played a large part in the results...

Thanks guys. It's the Carlson Buckshot HD in the picture above. I'll report back with the range results.

I use a modified choke tube in my Stoeger M-2000 (semi-auto). I use the 24" rifle-sighted barrel.
Shooting hand loaded 00 buck. 8 pellets at about 1300 fps.
Last time out, I shot at 25 meters and had 38 of 40 pellets in a 10" circle (5 rounds)
Works good enough for me!

Care to share your hand-loaded buckshot recipe??

Sure!

Remington hull
25.5 grains of Longshot powder
8 pellets of 00 Buck
WAA 114 wad
CCI primer
3.0 cc's of buffer

I put the buckshot in by hand, 4 layers of 2 pellets.

This load is lightweight, but cycles the Stoeger very well. Hulls take off and land 12 feet away.

got the load info from Handloader Magazine.
