Hi all,

I figure a post is my last ditch effort to find a load for OO buck and accurate #5 powder. Its the powder I use for my 12 gauge slugs and would like to make it work with the buckshot as well.

any Ideas on where to find a load... I've checked most of my resources and come up dry, I cant even find a load for #5 with birdshot....

Thanks!

I am in a similar situation. I like to reload 12GA. all Brass casings with hacked lead (hacked lead is basically a string of 1/4 inch hacked into 1/4 inch pices frequently used during the Indian wars. I got a good quantity of Ret Dot but very little loading information. My plan is to slowly and accurately work up a load starting with 1/2 oz lead using well dried Rawhide as a over powder Card then the Lead then another Rawhide over Led card glued in with wood Glue. I got a punch which is just slightly oversize for the ID on the casing. With the Powder I plan to start with 18grains. After each load fired will inspect Casing meticously and record and each load will be shot from the same distance into dry wood which will be split to get an idea about penetration.

Any sugestions will be appreciated and considered.----Thanks

Will you be using the same wad for your buckshot that you use for your slugs? If so I would just use the same weight of buckshot as your slugs and go from there. But that may just be me.

I could try, depending on how they "lay" in there I think I might need a shorter wad. The same weight would put me at 8 pellets.... or 1oz... It would be nice to get 9, 3 layers of 3. That changes the weight to 1and1/8oz.

But as far as this goes, I think that may be my only starting point!

when i did reload 12ga buck (not alot, only 200 rounds) i used federal high brass hulls (from the 175rd cans) with 1 1/8 ounce wads WAA12 i believe. they stacked nicely 3x3 with cream of wheat for filler.

According to Burning Rate Charts (and I have many) Accurate #5 is equal in burning rate to: Universal Clays, WSF and Unique.
Slightly faster than HS6, Win 540 and Power Pistol.
Slightly slower than Green Dot.
I hope this info is going to be some use for you.
GR8.
