A buddy of mine has found that his 257WTBY(26"bbl) is a bit cumbersome in the tight stuff where he likes to rattle whitetails or even for tracking black bears in even tougher stuff.
His requirements are lots of gitty up go for deer and bear in the sub 100yd range, yet something that won't leave you beating your head aginst the wall if sitting on point in a deer drive, or if Ol'Brutis shows up on the line 250yds away, while going into your stand.
He's currently looking at Mod. 7's in 308Win, as well as similar sized Ruger offerings, probably 180gr. to 200gr. reloads. I suggested him to get a 338Fed, or a 358Win built on a a short action boltgun, custom 18.5" to 20" bbl, and maybe "Scout" style scope mount.
What's your take, and input?
Thanks in advance.

here is the following announcement -exactly what you suggested:
Sturm, Ruger Announces New Calibers in the Target Grey® M77® Mark II Frontier Rifles
November 7, 2006
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR), is proud to announce two significant additions to the family of Ruger® Target Grey M77 Mark II Frontier rifles. The compact, fast-handling Ruger M77 Mark II Frontier rifle, with its distinct barrel rib for forward-mounting of intermediate-eye-relief scopes, is now available in the new .338 Federal and tried and true .358 Winchester.

The Target Grey Ruger M77 Mark II Frontier rifle features a weather-resistant, glare-reducing stainless steel barrel and action, complemented by a durable, non-warping, grey laminated wood stock. In addition to .338 Federal and .358 Winchester calibers, this model is still offered in .243 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, and .308 Winchester.

"The popularity of the stainless steel M77 Mark II Frontier rifles convinced us we needed to provide this easy-to-carry hunting package in larger calibers," said Sturm, Ruger President Stephen L. Sanetti. "While decades apart in their introduction, both the .338 Federal and the .358 Winchester are versatile, all-around calibers designed to meet the needs of hunters throughout the world. Having these compact bolt action rifles available in additional calibers provides a new level of versatility for hunters in wet environments and thick cover, where performance and quick handling are an advantage."

The Target Grey Ruger M77 Mark II Frontier rifle's compact, 16 1/2" medium-weight barrel with its scope rib cut for Ruger rings, makes for easy carry and accurate shooting in heavy cover. Front mounted, intermediate-eye-relief scopes help fast "eyes open" target acquisition and tracking, and permit easy loading and unloading without scope interference. The correctly proportioned, short 12 5/8" length-of-pull stock also permits fast handling, particularly when heavy hunting clothes are worn. These models also feature a new light and crisp Ruger LC6™ trigger. The overall length of 35 1/2" allows easy carry with either hand at the balance point of the rifle, even with a scope mounted. Each rifle also includes a Weaver-style scope base adapter, scope rings (supplied with each rifle at no extra charge...an $80.00 value), California-approved external locking device, and a comprehensive instruction manual.

Ruger also made them in .300WSM fro a while- there may still be some on the market -try ellwood epps.

I am the guy looking for the thumper,

hi and thanks for bringing it up here on cgn,
id really prefer to not get into the magnums, with a 16" pipe (on the ruger compact) im afeared of scorching the cape and deafing my already diminished hearing capability. to carry up a treestand, pickup or quad box. this replaces my pistol gripped 870
im really pumped about the ruger scout style...has anyone used one??

I have one in .300 WSM.(ruger doesn't sell them any more:( ) It's loud but not that much. more than a .300Winmag. At maximum it gives about long tube 30:06 level velocities out of the short barrel ( a loss of 25-30 FPS per inch, so not a lot). and 3 shot groups at 100 yards are 1/2 inch. :D

It define handy - its the ultimate moose rifle in my view. I switched from a .300 winmag because the long tube kept getting in the way.

the trigger was a little heavy at 5 pounds so I put in a timney- now have a reallysweet 2 pount pull, the new models now have an adjustable trigger -long overdue move on Ruger's part

the only problem i had with mine was that the scout mounted scope was only 2 1/2 power so did not gather enough light at dawn & dusk. so I got a base mount conversion to weaver on the receiver and put on a 3x9 on quick detach rings. I found out afterwards that Talley makes quick detach rings for the ruger so could have saved myself the hassle. live and learn.

the scout system is extremely quick -you kind of track with your non-scope eye and then home in with the scope. I'm going to experiment with a red dot this summer rto see if its any quicker....

I'm actually interested in getting the .358 winchester version for southern ontario deer/black bear..
A couple of other Nutz have posted on theirs -like me, they love them - one guy has a .300 WSM also.

a Model Seven in 260, 7-08, or 308 wouldnt be out of place hunting deer in Canada, from southern Alberta to Northern Ontario

Why not a Rem 750 Woodmaster in 35 Whelen carbine. Accuracy has been reported good if not sub moa and capable to say the least! Toss a low magnification scope or holosight on it and she be fast.

Marlin 1895 GS in 45-70. Has plenty of punch for anything roaming this continent and it's very compact and fast cycling. I have a blued one and its the only gun I use for the tight stuff!
