Buddy of mine phoned yesterday pretty shook up...he had just had a stand of primers ignite in his 650. He sent me a photo of the tube, other than a 1/2 inch at each end it is split wide open & charred with black carbon top to bottom. He hasn't found the long plastic insert yet (I told him to look inside the ceiling tile, last on I heard of that's where it was) and the black top flipper from the primer buzzer was across the hall & under a spare bed.

He suspects a spent primer re-seated itself and the new primer was crushed between it & seater. I don't think he uses Dillon dies with the spring loaded primer rod so something may be said about the usefulness of those dies.

I have had a couple primers detonate in my 650 over the years (he's only used this press for a couple months), when even one goes off, it will get your undivided attention immediately...I can totally understand his frame of mind after a whole stand goes off...LOL

Probably not the cause of this detonation.

Primer suck-back happens with Dillon dies as well.

I've been loading on a 650 for a couple of decades and have never experienced primer detonation. Maybe it has something to do with me cleaning the priming system (including the primer magazine) as part of my regular maintenance program.
