got a PM from another place, and my bud needs some help on this one.

this is what he sent

can you find out or tell me what a true Belgian Browning Auto 5 shotgun in very good condition be worth? It is a 12 guage with a 2 3/4 inch chamber. Be from the 50's I am sure.

Thanks.

any info appreciated

thx

There are various examples for sale on the equipment exchange quite often.

$250 range and up.

Many of the older ones are 2/34 -inch only, plain 30-inch full choke barrel, all of which pretty well limit their practical use for many purposes.

I have read that the older Belgian shotguns should not be used for steel shot even with the choke opened to modified. I do not know if that is 100 percent true or not. The older Remchesters can take it.

That said, a nice well-preserved example of a Belgian made Browning A-5 would be nice to have.

Like most things, it depends.
What is the bluing(worn/faded) and wood condition(cracks/shortened). Grade, model(standard weight/lightweight) barrel length, choke(IC/MOD/FULL) and bore condition. Vent rib/solid rib/no rib polychoke etc etc.
Canucklehead give you good advice, go to www.shotgunworld.com
go to the love my browning section and list as much of the above info as you can plus the serial no less the last two digits and they can date it for you.

Well if the gun is coming from New Brunswick they have ideas the average A5's are worth alot more money than anyone in Alberta does. So Mike its likely a full choked gun and what you would use it for here to hunt with is hard to say, not waterfowl, unless he wants to modify the choke, not a clays gun, maybe a long range pheasant killer. As previous posts have noted condition is everything as to value. In the VG condition range with a vent rib barrel and not messed with $350.00 - $450.00.

Shotgun world

Shotgun World is good for technical questions, but U.S. gun values vary considerably from Canadian ones for more reasons than just the exchange rate.

There are more people there, more collectors, more hunters of particular game, and thus their prices for some firearms can be inflated over ours.

So take the advice with a grain of salt.
