Just looking for some opinions for a .308 to mount my new 5.5-22 NXS on. I will mostly use for paper and steel that I have at 800, 1000, and 1400 with the odd hunting trip. I'm thinking 20" barrel with 24" max. Stainless would be a bonus. I don't want a plastic stock. Problem is my budget right now is not much over $1000. Just missed a great setup on the EE for $1400. Kicking myself. Any suggestions?

Remington 700 XCR tactical or a 700 5R is where I'd start. I realize remington's have gotten a bad rap the last few years but these are the higher end rifles they produce. They come with a nice HS Precision stock as well.

Did a quick search on the EE and didn't see anything but I'll keep my a look out for one. There are so many models. I just grabbed a 700P in 300wm and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Sounds like it would be comparable?

Just looked us specs. Looks good but is 1/12 ok for the heavier Bullets? I have a lot of 178amax and 175 smk to load up

The 700P and 5R are pretty much the same rifle I believe. I thought you were searching for a 308 Winchester which is why I recommended those rifles. 1 in 12 twist is generally better for the 168gr bullets but it certainly doesn't hurt to try a little heavier and see how your rifle reacts.

I am searching for a 308. I have the 300wm set up but need to ad another riffle.

I see the xcr is stainless too. That's a bonus. You might be on to something.

I settled on a 700p LTR. Thanks. Not stainless but it is 20" barrel and $500 cheaper than any 5r or Xcr

I was gonna say get a 20" 700 AAC-SD and drop it in a Boyd's Pro Varmint (the factory stock is garbage). That's what I'm currently running , shoot it weekly out to just shy of 1000 and have shot as far as 1280 in matches. Personally, I'm going with a 26" barrel on the rifle I'm currently putting together, you give up a lot of velocity with the 20" but it sure is handy.

If you see the last post that's basically what I went for. Thanks
