What would you recommend for a budget ($500) optic for 0-200 yards for my first AR?

I'm hoping something comes up on sale for Canada day but I'm not sure what to be looking for.

Thanks for any help

Are you shooting for groups or shooting to hit stuff? You can make reliable hits at 200+ metres with just a Holosun red dot, and that's about as cheap as you're going to get. Under $500, CTCS sells Primary Arms LPVOs that are generally good for how little you spend.

I bought one of the Primary Arms 1-6 scopes Agent Law mentions for my first AR a few months ago. I'm very pleased with it so far, and it sure makes hitting targets out to 300 yards (the longest I can shoot at my club) easy. I had originally also be considering a red dot, but I have astigmatism, and decided to go with a low power scope instead. The reticle on this scope is pretty cool, check out some YouTube reviews on them.

If you want budget then Vortex or Primary Arms, even cheaper if you find a deal in the EE. You could also try a magnifier for your red dot as well.

I’m currently getting into etched/prism since my astigmatism kills red dots.

I would definitely go with a 1-4/6/8scope. There's so many options, many of which have illuminated drop compensator reticles. Nice to have the option for some or no magnification.

I've been running a bushnell ar optics 1-4 throwdown PCL on my 3 gun AR for a while, and I like it a lot. It has a built in throw lever, illuminated FFP reticle (acts almost like a red dot at 1 power), and has has hash marks out to 500 yards. If they made the exact same scope in a 1-6 model, I don't think I would have picked up the 1-6 strike eagle I got for my SLR build.

Theres a 1-8 version of that scope supposedly coming out this summer. No details on it yet, but should hear something soon hopefully.

Got a Burris FF II 2-7x35 on mine. $110 plus tax. 340 grams. At 2x setting, it gives clear picture at distances 3 m and beyond, despite having no parallax adjustments. That 35 mm front lens collects a lot more light than any 1-4x or 1-8x.

There is a similar Vortex Diamondback 2-7. Both have BDC reticle.

Edit: ...also have a red dot. You can buy decent red dot AND 2-7x scope for the price of a mediocre 1-4x

Brand name low to medium power variable. I use 1 1/2-5 and 2 1/2-8 scopes. Work just fine from very close out to 500.

Red dot For around $500, Aimpoint PRO, It's an Aimpoint, can't go wrong. Love mine.
Magnified glass for around $500, Hi-Lux CMR 1-4, good glass, great turrets and reticle, lifetime warranty. I own two of them and should not have sold the other one I had but it went as a trade for the 7.62x39 model.

Our range is 200M max - bought a Nikon 2-7x32 P series scope for under $300 for my AR. It's plenty for that range, glass in nice and clear, and overall quality is nice for the $$.

1-6x scopes in general are probably what you're aiming for.

I'm a fan of the Vomz scopes from Corwin-Arms. Good clear glass, nicer than similarly priced Vortex Scopes (IMHO - and yes, I have some of the Vortex scopes too), and bloody-well bomb-proof rugged. I have 3 of them, 1 on my 3-gun AR. That one is on its 4th season of 3-gun, and has had the ever loving piss beaten out of it. Never once lost zero, and in spite of the obvious damage to it, the seals are still intact - doesn't fog up in the cold and wet. I'm starting to wonder what, exactly, it's going to take to kill the thing, it's built Russian Stronk.

A couple snaps of mine, I have it on one of the Bobro QD mounts, which I also highly recommend.

I use a Leupold 1-4x20 VX-Hog. It's around $350 in Canada and I love mine. It looks good on the AR and works good, too. On a Leupold IMS mount - another $120 so you're still under a $500 budget. And the Leupold mount is way lighter than a Burris PEPR. Scope weighs only 8.1oz, btw.
