Im sure this is like beating a dead horse....but, hear me out.

Im looking to setup a budget long range rifle. Im not competing, yet. I just want to go bang steel out to 1500 yards. Im torn between buying a Savage 12 Varmint in 6.5 Needmore (thats not a typo lol), a Savage 10t SR in 6 Creed or a Ruger american predator in 6.5 Needmore or 6 creed. Each one obviously has its perks and I want to be able to put a brake on it for multiple reasons.

Savage 12 Pros: Under $500, 26" barrel
Cons: No magazine, not threaded for a brake.

Savage 10t SR Pros: 24" barrel, available in a 6 Creed, threaded
Cons: $800, Still no magazine

Ruger American Predator Pros: Threaded Barrel, Detatchable mag, can get in 6 creed.
Cons: 22" barrel (slower velocity) still $700 +/-

If you guys had to choose, which one and why? I know a guy can have a barrel threaded but the whole goal is to run a turn key rifle without having to take it to a smith or do any mods. Im leaning towards the Ruger but nervous about the 22" barrel and low velocity. After all, an RPR is basically an american in a chassis..or is that wrong to assume?

Thanks guys, if anyone has any other ideas or suggestions throw them my way. I am open to the savage 12 without a brake, just wondering who shoots all day without a brake. Does the low recoiling 6.5 get to a guy after blasting for hours?

Clamp on muzzle brake.
Shooting out that far, why is a magazine important? You'll have time to single feed.
With a Savage you can spin on whatever barrel you want. Have a threaded one, have a 30" tube with no brake, have a barrel for 6 creedmoor, 6.5 creedmoor, whatever other calibers you want that share the boltface.
All F-Class shooters shoot without a brake, all day.

Ive heard horror stories of clamp on's. Was always told threaded is the way to go.
I would prefer a mag for the simple fact that if this rifle ever turns into a varmint toy as well that I have a mag for it. Its just personal preference thats all, sitting at a bench all day its not huge deal. And I get f-class shooters dont have a brake but their rifles also weigh in at 15+lbs.

Take a look at what member redshooter has been able to achieve with a Savage 10T-SR in 6-somethingerother, impressive for a relatively cheap rifle.

I've actually got two 10T-SRs, one in .308 and the other in .223. It's an impressive rifle for the money, although accessories are a bit sparse for the bottom bolt release rifles. You can get a ten (nine) round magazine for the rifle as well, Savage part number 55185 if I remember correctly. If you do want to get a 10T-SR, wait until they go on sale at Cabela's, the last sale price was around $650.

As for a muzzle brake, the MDT Elite brake works well and is self-indexing.

Look up, look waaaay up. Top of the page the ten shot challenge. Page 36, post #354. I've been really happy with my cheap ass LR Rig. It was $1650 all in give, or take $50. That's everything, even the Carbon Fiber Arrow Shafts, and JB Weld I used to modify the Stock to stiffen the forend, and skim bed the action/bed the recoil lug. Also the barrel is 26" for the 6mm CM, at least mine is. The extra 50 FPS is nice as 6mm CM is a bit hard on the barrel, I can drive them pretty hard, but not on the edge. I shoot sub MOA pretty much every group I don't pooch, most of those around 1/2" for 5 shots at 100m.

Have you considered any of the single shot options, I just bought a H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic in 45-70 , it's a break action single shot and it's a lot of fun and you can get out to 1000 yards plus with iron sights.

Thats awesome. Just curious as to what mag you're using for that? Thats one thing that I would really like or be able to add down the road. And you are right, the model 10t sr is a 26" tube for the 6 creed. Ive seen these go on sale for usually $600 but for $450 its sure tempting to go with the 12.

Please note that Savage now has various firing pin sets up in their SA's.... I have no idea how to tell which action has what as their numbering system is totally goofy now.

I have helped several customers address some inconsistencies in accuracy and traced it back to the cost cutting firing pin system.

I have moved away from recommending Savage cause I have no idea what I am recommending anymore. for an inexpensive donor that works very well, look at the Rem 783. Far less headaches....

YMMV

Intriguing. Any reading material about this issue so I can get caught up on it?

unless your skilled enough to do your own gunsmithing, why would you cheep out? save up your money and buy quality.

Had a custom 6XC, shot wonderful but unfortunately with the price of oil the last few years I had to part ways with it before I could really attempt anything over 500 yards. I lost my shirt on the sale and told myself I will probably never build again. I'll buy a cooper before I build a straight custom again, but in this case I wanna keep it cheap, get good with it and then upgrade down the road.

Why would you cheap out...maybe, just maybe, he doesn't have the cash for a Cadex. I'm really getting tired of this position. Everyone loves a quality item, but what exactly does that mean? There's best, and then there's good enough, good enough is just that, sufficient "quality" to do what you want it to. My entire rig cost less than most custom actions, and here's the best part, I wouldn't expect a high end custom to shoot any better. 1/2" or better for five shots, pretty much on command, is that representative of an "average" Savage, I've had enough to know the answer is damn close.

I'd love to buy a Cadex, or build a high end custom, but it's not going to happen. The idea that just anyone can save for a $5000 Rifle is to be blunt stupid. If that was my plan, I could also save on my Range Membership, because I wouldn't be able to shoot for 3-4 years squirreling away the cash...but maybe I could get them to send me a nice brochure. I could look at it and fantasize about the 1/3" groups I'm going to shoot in 3 years, or I could just load up some of my Cheap a$$ Hornady HPBT's and go knock off a few.

I really don't think some of you realize just how offensive this elitist BS crap is.

I have the 10tsr in 6.5 creed. It was accurate enough. Ejection was pretty weak but for the on sale price I had no complaints. It's since been parted out and will become another 6.5 creed with a custom barrel.

The Remington 783 is a decent little package too. I had one in 7mm and my buddy has the 16.5 308 model. Both were quite accurate for their price point.

I dropped my 10t into a chassis and that made it alot more enjoyable to shoot.

Swap in a match prefit barrel and I bet the performance will skyrocket.

Keep an eye for any hang fires... that is your firing pin spring crapping out. Swap in a WOLFF spring and problem solved.

Yup, I had a 783 and was very impressed with it, and sold it. Not really sure why...

Just got a pic from Jerry (thanks again!) for the build he is doing for me, its looking pretty slick. Its a 783 with IBI 12.5" barrel. Can't wait to start working out a load for it :)

I don't think you get it. As mystic is saying, throw in a prefit barrel and spring kit. why,, spend $300-$400 dollars more upfront, and buy a better platform.

I am buying an LSS tomorrow for my 783 .223. Its a great rifle. Id be curious what a 12.5" barrel would cost, w/ threaded muzzle and installed for a 783 .223.
