Comments, concerns, experience regarding some budget price over/under shotguns.

In particular I am interested in the Stoeger O/U Condor and the Baikel O/U guns.

Also, who in the Montreal area is selling the Baikel? Last I heard the only outley was Rusarm but they appear to be out of business.

I was instructing a new shooter on Saturday who was equipped with a 12 G O/U from IGA. (Brazilian made?). I was quite impressed with the balance and feel of the gun. Was extremly tight to close, as I felt like I had to slam it shut. I wouldn't trade my Beretta in, but I wouldn't want to take my Beretta out in the field either.

Remington is importing the Russian guns and marketing them under the "Spartan Gunworks" name. I think LebBaron's was supposed to carry the line. Check in Access to Firearms, the Baikal importer advertises there also.

i think armrus is STILL open, not sure for how much longer though... but if you can't get a hold of them for the Baikal guns. I know that Royalsportsman (www.royalsportsman.com) in BC also has the Baikal's in stock as well (save on PST)

Don't forget the Remington Spartan option.

These 12ga O/Us are basically Baikals with the Remington name on them.

Le Baron had a few in stock a while back check with them:

Access to firearms?
Where would I find this?

I ended taking a pair of TOZ34 in trades a little while back... They are nice little gun!

The " - "
- The finish on the wood is non existant...
- The Blueing is pretty basic
- I find the check piece a little narrow for my taste
- It takes a little getting used to loading the bottom barrel...

The " + "
- It swings nice
- The paterns on the Full/Modified choke are good, center been a few inches above point of aim at 20Y.
- Chrome bore
- easy to take down.
- Double trigger with independant ejector.

I took them apart and put some lin-seed oil on them... looks much better!

Safe shooting,
Mike.

I too was in the same boat. There was a used Stoeger in a local gun shop, so I went in for a look. Not a bad gun IMO, but I picked up (big mistake) a Beretta Silver Pigeon right after handling the Condor. What a difference! I went home with the Beretta.

Yup. Spend the extra money and get something good. I looked at a couple of Baikal's for a friend who wanted to get into an O/U on the cheap... Not worth saving the money. They're cheap for a reason.

I'm seriously considering a condor O/U combo with 12ga and 20ga barrels for $699 from wholesale sports. I want to use it for trap, ducks and upland game birds. I can't justify the big $ for a gun that I will beat up in the field.

My concern is that both barrels shoot to the same point. An O/U with barrels that shoot to different points is pointless. A reliable semi-auto could be a safer bet.

Ya well, I picked up a Franchi Alcone and went home to rethink the whole budget gun approach.

One that nobody mentioned here is the Traditions line by Fausti of Italy (a subsidiary of Breda I beleive). I bought one through S.I.R. a few years ago, an O/U 20ga called the Field I. It has a single slective trigger, and extractors, but I think they make an ejector model for a little more money. It has fixed chokes (IC and MOD on mine). It has a nickel receiver with nice engraving. I think it cost me $650 as they were selling them off. They had both S/S and O/U models, with one of the O/U model being a waterfowl special, steel shot capable, and done up in dark blue metal and camo wood. I don't know if they have any left but you can always try. I know that they were sold by Wal-Mart in the states, much like the Weatherby Vanguard.

Mine shoots very well, and I've used to shoot some hand trap, and introduce my nephews and very petite sister, and a girlfriend to shooting. The boys now shoot my 870 in 12 ga, but always seem to hit more clays when using the little O/U

You can check out their website here

http://www.traditionsmuzzle.com/index.asp

I don't know if anyone imports them anymore, but try SIR, or maybe Ellwood Epps

As far as the Stoegers go, I had one of the Boito 12ga S/S and although it was a dependable firearm, it wasn't really pretty, and didn't point very well. I got rid of mine after one season.

Ah yes, Franchi. I was considering a beauty O/U in 28ga till I saw the cost of ammo!!!

Most of my guns are black and plastic, but there something to be said about fine craftmanship. Not only do they shoot well, they sure are pretty to look at too. :D

$8 for challengers, in 7.5, 8 or 9's......................(Epp's)

The 28g is a reloaders gauge, that little franchi will practically pay for itself with your saving on reloading ammo.................:D

I saw the same ad. What they had are sold. According to buddy at the counter they are not expecting to get anymore. buddy says it was a Turkish manufacture and not Italian. Can't find a reference for Turkish manufacture sold by Traditions. I wonder sometimes about gun salesmen.
