I am trying to build a savage MK2 FVSR budget long range rifle and I am wondering if there is a budget FFP scope that could work for something like this.

I ran into a Nikki Sterling for 413$ with 44 Obj lens and a 34mm tube. Curious is something like that could work or is there are better options as I am totally new to anything Long Range related.

Why a FFP? I went with a RITON 1 Conquer in 6-24 x 50 SFP. I have been running this scope for 2 years, and other Ritons for 4 or 5 years. Here is what I like about it, optics are as clear and sharp as scops costing 4 x as much; I has enough vertical adjustment that I was able to sight it in at 20 yards with a 40 MOA rail, with enough dial up to shoot out well past 300 yards. The zero stop feature is great, 20 yards is my zero set point, then I just dial up based on a ballistic chart (eg Tac 22 at 100 yards is +6.5 inches; just dial up 6.5 MOA). It has been 100% repeatable. Same with the 0 center set for windage. The 1" tube I have found to be as bright as any of the 30mms I have shot with, statistically, there is also little if any difference in field of view with scopes of the same power, Bigger tube means more metal, bigger lenses and definitely more weight; this can be compensated for by adding more weight to the front end of the chassis or stock if you don't like the balance. Because it is so easy to dial, it has a relatively uncluttered reticle which is ideal for long range precision. Center dot allows for more precise aiming. (Most illuminated scopes have coarser reticles in my experience). Other features I like are the lens covers that come with the scope, and while not installed due to my low scope mounting, the throw leaver that comes with it is nice. I have added an after market Riton sun shade on the front end. They are very reasonably priced, I just found one on sale for $199; I paid about $350 back when I bought it. No regrets; worth every penny. Here also are some 10 shot groups at 100 yards with the rig pictured below.

I have a 4-16 on my 6.5 x 55 varmint rifle (also a Riton), it is perfect for coyote and ground hogs out to 300+, with it, I use the reticle for windage and elevation. I shoot pretty much exclusively at 100 yards now, but hope to visit a couple other ranges this summer and shoot at 200-300; I believe the rifle is always capable of sub MOA, but I may not be on any given day. LOL

If you’re going to be shooting lots of different distances then I would definitely get FFP optic. Once you have your dope, like the 6.5 at 100, whatever it is that dope is for every magnification on that scope. So if your at 3X or 20x it’s still 6.5 at 100 but if your using SFP its6.5 at only one magnification setting and different fo every other power setting. So in short if you were using a scope that’s 2x-10x that would be 9 settings from 2-10 with only one being the6.5 at 100 and different for all 8 other power settings. If you have 25 different dope settings with FFP that’s it but with SFP you have 25x8, so 200 settings. WithFFP the reticle size increases with the power iwith SFP the reticle remains the same so only on one power will your dope work. Change the power recalculate your dope!! I would also not buy any Nikki Sterling scope. Athlon,Arken, DNT and other companies all make FFP scopes. I’d go to a local CRPS,Outlaw,Northern rimfire event and there you can see what people are using and even get a chance to look thru some. Most shooters are more than happy to help out!!

FFP will give you a 'small' reticle at Low Mag, good for close shots if you're hunting or 'can popping', but let you 'dial in' for real accuracy at higher mags. 'Pends on what you're trying to do . . .

For me, harder to see.

Araz, I'd second Meroh's vote for the Riton X1 Conquer 6-24x50 SFP. I picked one up on sale at Tenda and liked it so much I bought 2 more. Very functional and well built with sharp optics.

Right now at Tenda for $220 on a killer sale. Can't beat it. For a MkII FVSR it would be great and not break the bank.
