Bought a H&R Buffalo Classic Rifle (45-70) recently. I love the rifle, love the cartridge, not crazy about the rear sight, a Williams peep. It's robust and easy to see, but I'd like to try something different. Anyone had any experience in this regard? Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try, " Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West ", by Mike Venturino, and " Loading cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield rifle and Carbine ", by J.S. and Pat Wolf.
Tracks book section on "Loading & Shooting Black Powder Guns ", has 38 titles listed.

I have two of these guns and I swpped out that Williams peep before I even shot them. I found military ladder sights and had my gunsmith afix them to the barrel just ahead of the chamber "hump". If you can find one with windage adjustment like from a Ross or Springfield M1903, you'll have a winner. Go here for lots more tips:

Andy-do you have any pictures of your arrangement of this sight?

I picked up Ross sight with the same idea in mind,I could use some pix for reference for

machinist who will do the work.

I have a Meacham sporting conversion of an 1873 Springfield in .40-70SS. Rear sight is missing. Found a dovetailed piece (originally for a forend screw) that fits perfectly. Also have a BSA Martin target sight for a Ross Mk. II** rifle. It is my plan to cut down a Ross Mk. III rear sight bridge, to get the pivot points and spring, and silver braze it to the dovetail base. Should work just fine. Just have to fine a suitable Ross rear sight bridge. Don't want to cut up a good one.

For using heavy bullets and black powder loads, you'll need alot more elevation, I'm sure MVA makes a high quality sight that will work on your "tangless"?? rifle.

Rear sight from a Mauser M71/84. I have another with a Ross sight, same positionning, but a more complex rear sight with windage. My ISP sucks, so some days it will show and other days it won't.....

I didn't mind the Williams on my BC for a fixed range...
The ladder is what I'm plannin for my rolling block, and a Winchester style dovetail for my ol FrankenSavage...
I'm going with a different style ladder sight tho...kind of a dual peep version, and I get off lucky with the flat top octagon barrel to mount to.

Andy, how come you didn't reply to my EE add for ladder sights :p

Great minds ;)

wish I had one :D

Try a Canadian builder of long range sights Red River Sights, or Lee Shaver makes a nice tang mounted sight I had one on a Rigby creedmoore match rifle that I had. I would like to try a Mike Neumann sight for my Parker Hale Muzzleloader tey are designed to be mounted on the stock of a tangless rifle, made for over 1200 yard shooting with a muzzleloader.
they are made in South Africa you can find him via Google

Here is a picture of a buffalo Classic with a tang sight mounted , i would give Red River a call and tell them how far you want to shoot, the barrel length on a buffalo classic and say 700 yds I would say a mid range tang sight would work.
