Do I need a 6 position buffer tube for a magpul stock and pls explain what tube I need if I'm gonna have a 16-20 inch barrel.

A standard 3oz carbine buffer should be fine for a 16 to 20" barrel.

Collapsible stocks (like Magpul) and buffer tubes come in two different sizes milspec and commercial.

So the question is, does your AR already have a commercial or milspec buffer tube? because that will define what kind of Magpul stock you have to buy.

There are milspec diameter 6 position tubes as well as 4 position ones. It's just a matter of preference as to which you decide to get if you go with milspec diameter. My preference is for more positions myself.

One more buffer related question:
I have a RRA LAR-15 16" carbine on the way, by mail, from Questar (my first AR - hence the questions). I have also recently purchased a lightly used LMT 10.5" upper. Will the same buffer that comes with the RRA 16" work with the LMT 10.5"?
Thanks again

A 16" RRA carbine should come with a ~3oz buffer, an LMT 10.5" carbine upper will work fine. However, 10.5" carbines have a very short dwell, and they have relatively large gas ports to get a quick burst of gas to operate the system, instead of getting a longer gas charge from normal dwell.

As a result, this can get things into motion more quickly and perhaps violently, and that's why the heavier buffers (H2 or H3) are preferred in these 10.5" applications.

The heavier buffers will tend to help delay your extraction slightly and to make the cycling slower and less violent. It will feel smoother with a heavier buffer.

While your standard buffer will work fine, you may want to consider an H2 buffer in the near future.

carbine length gas system...I'm asking because the gun came with a FA carrier and I'm looking for a spare complete bolt assembly... The last few on the EE were SA carriers so thought I'd ask before picking one up. Thanks for the info.
