Does anybody know off the top of their head what size the buffer tube is on AR-15A2 rifles made by Colt (milspec or commercial)?

My digital caliper battery died, so I can't tell. I need to know to order a collapsible stock for it.

Thanks!

AR16A2 rifles have an A2 stock, not a CAR stock. There's no such thing as a "commercial" A2 buffer tube - they are all the same dimension.

Either tube will work to convert an A2 to a collapsing stock, the threads are the same size for both Mil and Commercial spec tubes - get the one that matches the collapsing stock you plan to install. I've noticed that Mil spec set ups are generally less prone to wobbling than commercial ones.

Does it have a collapsible stock on it now? You say rifle so I'm assuming not. You'll need a new buffer tube in order to install a collapsible stock. Like has been said already either type will work.

If your rifle already has a collapsible stock and it's factory Colt then it will be a mil spec tube.

It doesn't have a collapsible stock on it now. So I need to order a buffer tube with the collapsible stock and replace the buffer tube to fit the collapsible stock? (for storage purposes mostly)

Yes, you'll also need a carbine buffer and carbine buffer spring, they're shorter than the one in your rifle. The buffers come in various weights, most people these days prefer the heavier ones (H1, H2, H3).

Also, assuming you want a decent CAR stock, most of them do NOT come with the buffer tube.

Another factor to consider is the barrel length. If you have a 20" AR, then you might actually prefer leaving the A2 stock in place.

If you do want a CAR stock, I can get you most of the way there if you check my EE ads, I've got a well-priced mil spec tube (Stag), Colt castle nut, and Magpul MOE stock for sale (and an MOE grip), but you'd still need a new receiver end plate, car spring and a CAR buffer. Most AR dealers have those parts readily available and inexpensive.

Wolverine or Armseast has everything you need if you want to buy new. Both are board sponsors as well.
