So here is your chance to say what you think would make a great AR 15.

I would like to hear what everyone thinks would be a great build.

For example I like:
-A Colt lower (go with what is best)
-A mill spec upper with m4 feed ramps & a flat top
-A 16" m4 profile c lined bushmaster barrel (a good steel mix) unless I could find a gently used cold processed Demarco.
-The furnature, a colapsable stock and a rail to hang lots of toys off and to fit in different situations.

There are soooo many choices out there whats yours. Barrels, bolts, uppers, lowers, rails, bits of plastic or fancy alloys and so on and so on .....?

I think this rifle would be pretty good...

16" midlength (BCM or CMMG)
LMT Lower / standard 6 pos stock
CMT BCG -> properly staked
A3 Upper with Carry Handle

No useless tacticool stuff; just a simple rifle...

Can you elaborate on "(go with what is best)"?

Obvious disclaimer and bias aside, If I were building a parts gun based on qualities inherent of the components only, and not the quality of assembly, Colts would likely be my last choice of lower receiver.

They vary model to model and over the years, but why get involved in odd pin sizes, sear blocks, ground down selector stops, etc, when building a parts gun?

The only individual Colt parts which I place a premium on vs other quality brands, would be the barrel and bolt.

YMMMV, and again, I'm talking parts, not factory complete rifles put through factory quality control standards, where Colts DO shine.

Final thought, figure out what you want the rifle to do for you, how specialized or generalized the tasks required are, and build the rifle that meets your requirements.

Best , eh?

That's tough to define especially in light of the varying needs of shooters.

After many years of black rifle competition at both provincial and national levels, I've come to learn that sometimes having parts that are easily sourced (other friendly competitors) and replaced (tools nearby) into user friendly uppers and lowers (Bushy, Eagle, RRA, Stag, Armalite, yada yada yada) will sure come in handy when dealing with life's little surprises.

Now OTOH, at a 2 way range, things get much more intense with more surprises.

My 2 after-tax cents worth.
