If a fellow were sitting around one Fine Sunday afternoon, lusting over fancy rifles and decided to build one, what should he build?
Now this would be a semi custom. You could pick the action, barrel, trigger, stock, mount's and scope. The only stipulation is, no common cartridges. Also, the cartridge must be a short action. No .30-06, .270, 7mm-08, .308 or 6.5x55. Somthing that you always thought was cool, completely obsolete and a pain to find brass for. Cartridges like the old 257 Roberts, .260 or .338 Federal would be considered exotic enough, as few rifles are made in these. I'm just tired of hearing how the .30-06 is Gods answer to everything. And everyone knows already you just have to have a 6.5x55. Let's debate about interesting rifles.
I think if I could put one together, I would select a stainless model 700 short action. I would like the action coated in teflon or similar material. A stainless barrel cut to 22 inches, and maybe fluted and left in the white. As much as I love wood stocks, a rifle like this would beg to be used. Therefore I would select a high quality synthetic. Probably a McMillan. But in a standard sporter style with a nicely fluted, straight comb. Since my rifle has no sights, nor will I change scopes, fixed mounts will ride atop. I like the Leupold Dual dovetail, and it would still look nice. The scope will also be a Leupold. A fixed 6 power would be plenty, but a 3.5-10x40mm would probably get the vote. And as for a cartridge? In this era of high tech wonder rounds, I think somthing like the .250-3000 would be about as sensable a cartridge as I could pick, since this rifle would be used alot.
