I am looking to get into More long range shooting and want a more capable platform. I am on the fence right now on which direction to go. I have a Remington 700 VSSF II in 22-250 right now. My options I'm looking at are to True my 700, and rechamber in 6.5 creedmoor, cerakote, new bolt knob, new scope, rings, and 20MOA base. Eventually I may go to a McMillan or Manners stock as well. Or just buy a Ruger Precision rifle in 6.5 along with scope and rings.

I already have a Trigger tech trigger on my 700 as well as a Leupold VX-3 which I could sell to fund a new scope.

Figuring out the dollar amount puts me at about $5000 for the RPR including scope. And about $4000ish for the 700 without a new stock, including new scope but selling my old one.

Just looking for some insite on what direction to go. I'd go full custom but then I'm looking at like $8-9000 including scope and I don't wanna be in it that much

Tough call. A good trued rem 700 is good. It would, if your gunsmith and barrel are good, outshoot a factory RPR any day of the week. Actions are not really the accurate part of the rifle anyway. There are factory savages out there that shoot excellently (do not flame me please!). But get a good barrel that is chambered right and the barrel is straight (talking to some f-classer's, there are guys out there that will buy a wack of barrel, chamber them in whatever caliber and shoot them all until they find the best barrel, and these are from match grade barrels) and screwed on to a square action, and you are good to go.

But then again, buy once cry once. Personally, I'd get a good action like defiance or surgeon and etc, build around it, and you are good to go. But if saving money is the big goal, and since you have the rem 700, just get it rebarreled, trued, etc, and let 'er buck.

I would re barrel your r700.

I just went through this, the only reason I bought the RPR is my r700 in .223 already has a custom barrel and shoots so well I didn't want to tear it apart. My RPR is good, but I am having to upgrade it to make it the way I like it, and the more I shoot it, the more I am seeing the downfalls in the stock barrel.

Re-barrel the R700

Go with .260 Rem or 6.5x47 and use Lapua brass with which ever you choose. Use 123 o 139 Lapua Scenars as suggestions for projectiles

I don't know how you are pricing your existing 700 to get to $4000 without a new stock... forget about the scope cost... it's the same for what ever you do... true a 700 action and bump the bolt varies from $225 and up... a good barrel install $650 and up, bolt knob $75 ? ... The trued 700 with a good barrel install will shoot with the best of the customs...

I would re barrel you current action. Personally I would go with a 6.5X47; better brass.

+1 on this. Snipers hide did a video recently debating 6.5 creedmoor vs .260 Remington. If you know squat about reloading, and do not want to learn, the cm is the way to go. But as mentioned here, there is better brass available for the .260 and 6.5X47 so they are great choices, if you reload. Reloading, imo for lr shooting, is a must.

If you want precision Id stay away from Ruger products. The EE is flooded with RPR's...dont think they are living up to the hype.

Like everyone has mentioned...dress up your M700.

Cheers!!

I had budgeted $1000 for barrel, install, truing. $200 for 20MOA base (which RPR comes with), $400 cerakote, $150 bolt knob and install. Then scope budget was about $2800 and hoping to sell my scope for $700ish. So that leaves me sitting at $3900. So cost without the scope I guess I'm looking at about $1750 to just build on my 700.

I guess I still have time to decide between Creedmoor and 6.5x47. I am already completely set up for reloading and have been doing it for years with my 7mm Rem Mag and 22-250.

My 6.5cm is shooting just shy of 2" @ 300m 5 shots. But I'm not satisfied with that, after extensive reloading and testing.

.5-.75 MOA factory ammo... It shoot fine, but if you read my write up. Just a lot of small things. If I could do it again, remm 700 action, custom barrel in a HS or Mcmill stock...

My vote is upgrade the 700 to a .260 or 6.5 lap. The RPR is an entry level precision rifle built to a price point and will require upgrades to get really competitive. If you like the chassis then go for it but dollar for dollar upgrading the 700 will be a better investment and potentially, more accurate in the long run.

Yeah my .308 RPR using 155 gr Hornady steel match groups 5 shots 100yards like crap.

And at 200 yards it just gets worse.

Dont know if it will help you to choose, but I have buit 2 custom 300WM with benchmark barrels 28" 5R 1-10.
The first on an old 700 action and the other on a stiller tac 300. Both rifles shoot exactly the same and very accurate to 600 yards. (these 2 are our moose hunting rifles.)
Its true that some 700 actons are pretty bad but most are very good. If you have the action in hand there are a few test you can do to see if it will be an easy built or if it neefs truing.

I think the RPR's on the EE are because of guys buying into the hype and not having the dedicated time to get out and get some trigger time with it. I think either way would be a great experience for you! Do a build or buy your RPR ready to go out of the box :) Happy Shooting!

The 6.5 x 47 Lapuas I have built are shooting like lasers... very happy customers... it's a nice round.
