Build my own rifle, where to start

Things to consider - Not in any particular order
Caliber
Action type(bolt, lever, etc)
Usage(target, hunting type(dangerous game, bige game, varmint, etc))
Components ie synthetic, wood, stainless steel, chrome moly

What type of action do you want? Bolt repeater or falling block single shot etc. There are two single shots that come to mind; a vault lock designed by Frank deHaas and plans published in a book by him and secondly is a rifle appearing in a series of articles in "the home shop machinist"

When you say you have never started one from the ground up before... what does that mean? Have you got the tools and skill to thread fit and chamber barrels, cut and weld bolt handles, inlet the stock and finish and checker it?
Or are you talking about buying a barreled action and putting it in a synthetic stock?
and on and on.... etc...

You will want to start with a good action. Mauser 98 actions are a good action as are browning bbr actions. Next you will have to choose a type of Stock. Wood, Fiberglass, etc. Next you will have to decide on a calibre. Armed with your action, stock and a choice of calibres go find yourself a good gunsmith that will build you a barrel. I had a 308 Norma mag built at Alberta Tactical Rifle last year, and it will shoot as good and better than I can. Hope this helps a little.
The good thing about Remington actions is there are tons of aftermarket stuff to go on them. They are easy to work with, are accurate and priced well.
If you just building an accurate, lightweight, "Meat & Potatoes" gun, go with the Remington. If your going to build a full blown custom "Classic" rifle, you'll want to look for a pre64 M70 or an FN Mauser action.
