OK, I want to build a 22 for my kid, i've got 2 choices as basic platform, an old cooey single shot or a remy 574 pump action. Now the thing is I don't like the rear sight on the remy and the cooey is missing both of them. I was thinking of puting biatlon type sights on the cooey, or replacing the rear sight of the remy with a williams hole. Any1 as experience with the williams and would like to share the pros and cons would be greatly appreciated.

that's exactly what I am doing for my kid-using a #75 Cooey single shot .So far I;ve slimmed down and redone the stock[it was a fine piece of walnut that came up beautifully,]cut the barrel to 18 1/2 ''and filed in scope grooves.Next is polishing and reblueing,and he's good to go.I think single shots are the best way to introduce a kid to shooting
Put good sights on!!! The byathalon sights are perfect.
Remember, kids are smaller and the rifle must fit to be able to learn to shoot.
When I started my girls into shooting, I used a Cooey Sure Shot, (a model 75 sold by eatons) shortened the barrel, added target sights worth 20 times what the rifle would ever be worth. Then I cut off the butt stock 5" behind the pistol grip, inserted a steel tube into the remaining stock. The butt plate was then welded onto a smaller steel tube and that tube inserted into the one in the wood, kind of a piston and cylinder looking thing. A set screw thru the side was then used to secure the stock at the right length for the little ones. The oldest "Little one" will soon be turning 20 and when she comes out .22ing with dad we adjust the butt to fit her lock it down and away we go.
