What would be the most cost effective solution to building a 17 Fireball? I realize Remington has a few different rifles available, but I don't necessarily want to own a Remington. Thanks in advance.

Just about any cheap ass rifle with a .222 bolt face could be re barreled ... it would not be cheap to do though. Custom quality barrel and a reamer and a headspace gauge and the labour ... easily $800 or more on top of what ever rifle you buy to start with...

I don't understand why that would be a "bummer"...? In an unlikely worst case scenario it may not shoot as well as you would like... you still would have one of the strongest, safest actions to build on with a ton of aftermarket stuff available. It's all a bonus in my opinion.

Rem SPS .223 - $530ish
New Barrel - $300-$400 (Depends on the maker you decide to go with)
Reamer from Pacific Tool and Gauge (if your GS doesn't have one) - $70-$100
Headspace Gauge - $50ish (I think)
True Action, Chamber, Crown and install Barrel - $300 (Less if you decide not to true the action but I cannot think of 1 reason why you wouldn't get it done while everything is apart)

I've heard that brass is more plentiful now, although I might have to buy a bunch of factory ammo and reload the brass.

As was said, the easiest, cheapest and quickest is to rebarrel a Savage or Stevens.

Shilen prefit come in a the 17MachIV which IS the 17 Fireball. 4 barrel contours are available in a variety of lengths.

Thanks for the reply Jerry. Do you think it would be possible to get the internal .223 mag to work with the .17FB?

A 'block' is placed in the back of the mag well to position the shorter cartridges close to the front of the mag. Keeps them from diving and jamming up. As long as the mag lips have support over the case (they don't pop out), should feed.
